Would You Give Up Your Livelihood to Stand Up for What You Believe in?

For many, the idea of sacrificing their livelihood to fight for a cause they believe in seems like an impossible task. However, individuals often face such dilemmas when their values and conscience come into conflict with their professional obligations. In this article, I will explore personal experiences and the reasons behind such sacrifices.

Standing Up for a Higher Purpose

Many believers in Christ, like myself, desire to share their faith journey with others to demonstrate God's grace. Yet, the question we face is not whether to share our beliefs, but at what cost. Would I give up my career and the comforts of American life to hike in the woods with a tent, sharing my faith with remote communities? It is a question that requires deep introspection.

Finding a Balance Between Faith and Livelihood

For me, my writing and astrology are my soul-stuff. In this regard, I strive to make my passion my livelihood. Writing, for me, is a form of expressing my innermost thoughts and beliefs, while astrology connects me to the divine and provides a sense of purpose. However, pushing my beliefs to the extreme and leaving the comforts and financial security of my current life is not something I would do without the support of my faith family and a team to accompany me.

Four Ethical Stances at the Cost of My Job

Unfortunately, there are moments when our ethical stands come at a severe cost. Here are four instances where my ethical convictions cost me my jobs.

The Tennessee Valley Authority Incident

My first major incident occurred at the Tennessee Valley Authority as a "junior draftsman." I noticed an electrical conduit running through a water drain in the submitted design, which seemed absurd. Upon questioning the supervisor, he refused to acknowledge that there might be a problem. Eventually, he suggested that I take a break in the bathroom to avoid attention to my inactivity. This incident lasted a grueling three weeks, leading me to walk out in protest.

Aborted Beginnings of a Fundraiser

At Associated Marketing, a fundraising organization, I joined a team engaged in cold-calling for solicitations. The organization itself was involved in civil rights work, and I sought to explore the income tax withholding procedure to ensure fairness. After three weeks of withholding without complaint, I received an unexpected question from the manager about whether I was carrying a firearm. Sensing a red herring, I walked out.

Domino’s Pizza Incident

At Domino’s Pizza, a "Manager in Training," I confronted a colleague who mishandled a situation involving an employee with depression. In a moment of high-stress, I grabbed the colleague by his shirt to express my frustration, leading to a physical altercation. This action cost me my job and forced me to reflect on the ethical boundaries I would not cross.

Loader Operator’s Tragic End

My most recent incident involved an Articulated Loader operator at a remanufactured bakery. When my supervisor abandoned his crew for a prison guard position, the atmosphere at work became toxic. After implementing several demands and ultimately threatening to strangle the last coworker who dared to question him, I resigned to prevent further harm.

Conclusion

Persevering in ethical stands can indeed cost us our livelihoods. But for those who prioritize their beliefs over material success, the sacrifice is often rewarding. It is crucial to find a balance between our passions and our responsibilities. For me, my writing and astrology are not just careers but a fundamental part of my spiritual journey.

Would you be willing to make such a sacrifice? Let’s discuss in the comments.
