Will Generation Z Be More Conservative, Liberal, or Independent?

As we delve into the political inclinations of Generation Z, a cohort born in the early 2000s, it is clear that the common narrative of increasing liberalism throughout life does not hold for this generation. Unlike their predeccessors, Generation Z is showing a unique blend of political views, sometimes leaning liberal and at other times moving towards a more independent or even conservative stance.

General Trends and Differences

Liberalism is often associated with young individuals, and this holds true for the majority of Generation Z. They are characterized by their openness to new and innovative ideas, and their views on equality and tolerance can often surpass those of previous generations. However, it is important to note that there is a significant mix within this generation. Just as older generations were diverse in their ideologies, so too is Generation Z. Some are deeply liberal, while others exhibit a more conservative view, or are simply indepentent in their beliefs.

Individual Perspectives and Partisan Views

For myself and those I know, the ideological leanings tend to sit more towards the liberal side of the political spectrum, but with a strong sense of fiscal conservatism. This manifests in a preference for libertarian or even more classical liberal views, deeply opposed to progressive political movements, and with a strong belief in personal freedoms and minimal government intervention.

When considering the political spectrum in the U.S., with the Libertarian Party showing support from around 12% of Generation Z, it is evident that this trend towards fiscal conservatism is not limited to ideological views but also extends to party affiliation. The Libertarian Party's emphasis on personal freedom and limited government aligns well with the views of this generation.

The Influence of External Events

The political landscape has been shaped by numerous events, from wars to economic policies, and these have had a significant impact on the evolving political views of Generation Z. For example, the involvement in the War on Terror, particularly under the presidency of Donald Trump, has led to increased concern among this generation. The deployment of a younger cousin to serve as a Medic in a five-year tour further underscores the daily reality of such risks and the constant worry that families of Generation Z face.

It is important to acknowledge that political stances are not monolithic. While some representatives of Generation Z may support Republican or Democratic policies, the internal contradictions within these parties are often seen as problematic. For instance, the doubling of the national debt by the Democratic Party under Obama, or the nationalist, xenophobic, and protectionist stances of the Republican Party, both appear unappealing to this generation.

Environmental Stance and Market Solutions

On environmental issues, Generation Z is in general agreement that climate change is a real and man-made problem. However, the solutions proposed by traditional political parties are often seen as insufficient. Instead, they advocate for free market solutions, which they believe will address environmental concerns more effectively. This includes reducing government intervention and promoting policies that encourage corporate responsibility and innovation.

The belief in free market solutions for climate change is not just a reflection of their economic views but a deep conviction in the power of innovation and individual action to create meaningful change. The criticism of agreements that allow for continued pollution and funding of contaminating corporations highlights a desire for genuine, actionable change rather than empty ideals.

Conclusion: A Call for True Patriotism

Contrary to the rhetoric of some political figures, it is clear that Generation Z is deeply concerned with America's future and the well-being of its people. The risks faced by family members and loved ones in military service underscore the real sacrifices made by individuals for the country's security. Patriotism, it seems, means more to this generation than political posturing or personal gain.

Time to restore power to the people is a rallying cry for a generation that seeks meaningful change, not just more division. As we move forward, it is essential to engage Generation Z in discussions about the future and to create policies that reflect their values and aspirations.
