Why Did I Go to Business School and What Were My Goals?
My journey to business school and the subsequent realization of my goals took many twists and turns, reflecting my evolving aspirations and the challenges I faced along the way. Initially, I set my sights on becoming an investment banker, driven by the allure of the role and the financial gains associated with it. However, as my first year progressed, I began to realize that the hours required to maintain such a position - often working 60 to 100 hours a week - and the moral compromises it entailed, did not align with my values. This realization led me to reevaluate my career path and explore alternative options.
A Change in Path
My first major was finance, but I soon discovered that the pressures and ethical dilemmas of working as an investment banker were not for me. I changed my major three times before settling on Entrepreneurship and Innovation. This new major provided a more fulfilling and ethical path for me, allowing me to spend 100 hours a week building my own business rather than working for someone else. Through my studies and passion for entrepreneurship, I am now pursuing a few new products aimed at solving people's pain points. This project is both exciting and fun, and it aligns with my goal of using my skills in finance to create meaningful solutions.
The MBA Experience
When I entered my MBA program, I had grand expectations of climbing the corporate ladder and securing a superior position within a large company. However, I soon realized that many individuals with an MBA have similar aspirations, making the competition for top positions more intense. My experience taught me that while an MBA is valuable, it is not a guaranteed ticket to success in management.
Challenges and Achievements
The path to my degree was not without challenges. My father had less than a year of college, and my mother had taken a few courses. Despite these obstacles, and with a full-time job and family responsibilities, I managed to graduate with a degree in finance. Originally, my intention was to become a stockbroker, but after learning more about the profession, I shifted my focus to researching for a large firm. Although I didn't succeed in this endeavor, I found my true calling in finance.
No Set Goals Going In
Entering business school without any specific goals, I discovered that for many students, the ultimate goal is to work for a large, established company. It serves as a general aspiration for those who are unsure of their future. However, my experience has shown me that with the right mindset and the right path, you can find your true calling in your chosen field.
