What Has Your Blockbuster Become?
What Has Your Blockbuster Become?
Remember the days of stepping into a Blockbuster video store, browsing through the vast collection of DVDs and VHS tapes? As a popular entertainment hub, it's hard to believe that it's no longer part of our daily routines. But many ask, what has become of Blockbuster? Let's take a look at how these iconic stores have transformed into something new and exciting.
The Sad Demise of Blockbuster
Unfortunately, Blockbuster didn’t fare well in the digital age. Once a staple of leisure and entertainment, many Blockbuster stores have closed down due to the rise of online streaming services. As the market shifted, Blockbuster stores became abandoned and redeveloped into various establishments.
For example, an original store in Ontario that was once a Gertrude Hawk Chocolates is now just an empty parking lot. Meanwhile, a Blockbuster store in Utah that was Closed transformed into a breakfast/lunch restaurant called Sunset Grill.
Similarly, in rural Idaho, Blockbuster stores that were once filled with movies and video games, like the one that was a Hollywood Video store, have been repurposed. These locations have become:
A mobile telephone store A furniture rental store A Panda Express (a popular fast-food chain)Even the fortunate ones that managed to stay open for a while, like the store I worked at, eventually closed and became a Buddy’s furniture store. Another nearby location, previously a 99 cent store, is now a tire rim sales/ installation place, and it's now a Gold’s Gym before it relocated to a former grocery store. Some of these locations are now Animal Society places.
The Resilience of Blockbuster
While the typical Blockbuster no longer exists, the brands and memories remain. The Blockbuster name was sold and transformed into a pet supplies store, Pet Food Express. Although you can no longer rent an evening's entertainment, you get to cater to the cats, which can be a nice exchange.
As for the corporate headquarters' stringent rules, Blockbuster once had a rigid structure. Movies were chosen globally, and stores had to follow specific guidelines. This led to a sometimes disappointing selection of children's movies or foreign films. However, some believed that each store should have had some degree of discretion to tailor the selection to the local community's needs. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and with the rise of digital entertainment, Blockbuster stores gradually disappeared.
Conclusion
The transformation of Blockbuster into various businesses is a testament to how retail trends shift with time. While it may be sad to see these iconic stores gone, it's also interesting to see how they have adapted and transformed into something new. Whether you're now getting entertainment from streaming services or you're shopping for pet supplies, it's clear that the Blockbuster era is over, but its legacy lives on.
