Education has a profound impact on our lives, and for me, that journey has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. My passion for creativity has flourished through years of education and varied experiences, leading to a rich and fulfilling life of writing, teaching, and artistic expression.

From Early to Late Bloomers: Education's Unseen Magic

My formal education came to an abrupt end at the age of 14, a decision that seemed to put a pause on my educational growth. It was not until 15 years later that I resumed my educational journey, embarking on a one-year university diploma in sports coaching. This small step marked a significant turn in my intellectual journey, but it was not until my mid-40s that my creative intelligence truly blossomed.

Enrolling in a Master's in Sociology at the age of 40 was a pivotal moment. It ignited a fire within me, sparking a new interest in academic inquiry and expanding my horizons. This was followed by a PhD, which not only deepened my intellectual pursuits but also fueled my creative endeavors. Over 27 years later, I am proud to have published 12 books and numerous articles, covering diverse topics from men and masculinities to sexual identity education, leadership, and organizational culture.

The journey of continuous learning has been a catalyst for my growth, and each step has been a testament to the immense value of education in nurturing creativity. The MA and especially the PhD have been instrumental in guiding me, both as a child and as an adult learner, and I owe a lot of my success to the educators who supported and inspired me along the way.

Life experiences have played a significant role in shaping my creativity. Engaging in new jobs, teaching, and discovering new places have expanded my horizons, exposing me to diverse perspectives and experiences. My mind has been like a garden, flourishing with new ideas while pruning away limiting beliefs and behaviors. Continuous learning and growth in the creative arts have been key elements in my journey.

Writing has been an essential part of my creative process. I have read over twenty books on creativity to gain new insights and perspectives. Courses and workshops have also played a crucial role in my development, and I have leveraged the expertise of different editors to gain different viewpoints, fostering a richer and more nuanced understanding of my craft. Each challenge has pushed me to grow and refine my skills.

Social Support and Present-Moment Awareness

Having friends who are skilled artists and designers has been invaluable. Their advice and constructive feedback have helped me refine my artistic skills and overcome creative blocks. Slowing down and staying present has allowed me to be more aware of my underlying beliefs and habitual behaviors, which often hinder my creativity.
