Organizations view employees as the most valuable asset, a viewpoint encapsulated in the phrase 'human resources.' However, the theory and practical implementation of HR practices often diverge, leaving much room for improvement.

The Role of Human Resources in Organizational Success

Human resources are essential to organizational success. Treating employees as assets means ensuring effective working relationships in the workplace, which significantly impacts performance. Human resource management (HRM) is a modern strategy aimed at managing employees more effectively to enhance organizational performance through better employee performance. HRM involves attracting, developing, and maintaining the best workforce to align with organizational goals and objectives.

The primary objective of HRM is to create effective employment relationships through the effective use of HRM practices. Unfortunately, the hospitality sector, which is the largest employer globally, often falls short in adopting these practices. Despite the elegance and appropriateness of HRM concepts, their practical implementation remains limited in many organizations.

Personal Experience with Human Resources

Am I a human resource professional? In one sense, I am not designated as such; rather, I am a human being. However, the way we choose to perceive ourselves significantly influences how we approach our roles. Whether I am consciously labeled an HR professional or not, the principles of HRM have shaped my professional journey. My academic background and subsequent experience have provided me with a robust understanding of the various facets within the field of human resources.

Initially, my studies during my bachelor’s degree included a deep dive into the complexities of human resources. I also engaged with practising HR professionals and explored the nuances of the field. My first two job experiences allowed me to understand the practical implications of HRM. Over time, I have shifted my narrative to acknowledge that my HR role was a fortunate development, leveraging my strengths in persuasion and sales.

Reflecting on my career, I feel that my diverse skill set makes the HR role uniquely suited for me. In my 14 years of experience, I have witnessed a great deal of variability among professionals. A marketing professional may have no financial understanding, an operations specialist may excel in processes but struggle with numbers, and an introverted finance person may prioritize numbers over human interactions. My versatility aligns well with the dynamic nature of an HR position.

Tips for Interviewing in HR

When preparing for interviews or discussions about HR, it is essential to present a clear and coherent understanding of your role. Here are some tips that might help:

Be Prepared: Know what you are saying. Read about the HR field and understand the various possibilities. Figure out what interests you and why. Stay Authentic: Avoid clichés such as 'I like working with people.' Instead, focus on your unique qualities and how they align with the HR role. Stay Flexible: Recognize that there is no one 'right' answer. The interviewer is looking for your purpose and awareness of the role you are stepping into.

In summary, while HR is a vital component of organizational success, its practical implementation requires continuous effort and improvement. Understanding the principles and challenges of HR can provide valuable insights and guidance for both practitioners and professionals.
