The Valuable Lessons from My Time as a Grocery Store Cashier
Working as a cashier in a grocery store for a few months taught me several valuable lessons that I apply in my current career. It was an interesting job that I am glad I had and it instilled in me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those in such roles, particularly when it comes to minimum wage and the impact on their lives.
Experiences and Opportunities
During my time as a cashier, I not only gained valuable skills but also had some unique experiences that helped shape my perspective. One of the most memorable days was when a frequent customer, known for his consistent visits, came in one night before Thanksgiving. He usually had a smaller shopping list, but this time, he brought in a lot more food than usual. The store was quite busy, and I inquired about the reason. He mentioned that his wife's brother and his family would be visiting, leading to an insightful conversation where he revealed that his wife's brother was Doug Davidson, a well-known actor on the TV show The Young and the Restless. When I later learned that Doug Davidon's real name was Gerald Robert Davies, Jr., I felt impressed, as I had met only one celebrity in my life - Gene Simmons from KISS. A few weeks later, he visited the store again, this time with Doug Davidson, providing me the opportunity to meet him and even get an autograph from him. Still, the most valuable lesson I learned from this experience was related to the nature of the job and the people working in it.
Understanding the Role of a Cashier
As a young teenager at the time, I did not fully appreciate the impact of the monotony of the job on the employees. Standing on my feet for long hours, dealing with the daily rush of customers, and the repetitive process of scanning items and bagging them all seemed monotonous. It was hard work, and the physical strain was something I took for granted. However, looking back now, I understand that the job is not just about the routine but also about the unpredictability of customer behavior and the occasional delightful moments, like meeting a celebrity or making a difficult customer's day a little bit better.
Sympathy and Empathy
One of the most significant realizations I had from this experience is the importance of sympathy and empathy towards those who work in such roles. I now have a deep understanding of the challenges these individuals face, particularly when they work in roles that pay minimum wage. These jobs are often considered low-skill and easy-going, but the reality is far from it. Working for minimum wage can be a struggle, especially when trying to support a family. I cannot help but feel sympathy for the 50-year-old lady who often works as a cashier. I see her standing on her feet for long hours and I wonder about her family, her dreams, and her struggles. It is easy to lose patience with her when she is slow or making mistakes, but I remind myself that she is human and she is doing her best to earn a living.
Avoiding the Grudges
Although I have good experiences, I am not going to take the job again, as I believe in self-care and fulfilling my passion in life. However, I want to convey to all the nastily impatient customers out there that she is not working there because she enjoys it. On the contrary, she needs that 8 an hour to feed her family and make ends meet. She has no better opportunities, and if she did, she would not be chosen for such a position. It is not a glamorous job, and it does not pay well, but it is hard work, and I respect those who do it.
Conclusion
Working as a cashier taught me a valuable lesson about the challenges faced by those in similar roles and the importance of empathy and understanding. It is crucial to be aware of the impact of our actions and words on others, especially when they are working hard to provide for their families. I would urge everyone to be kind and patient with those who serve us, and to appreciate the roles they play in our lives, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.
