The Average Salary in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary in the U.S. surpasses $59,000 per year. This figure grows even more impressive for those who pursue higher education. For instance, an individual with less than a high school diploma earns an average weekly wage of $682, translating to an annual salary of $35,464. Completing high school increases this weekly wage by $25 to $853, bringing the annual total to $44,356.

Education Pays Off

Further education significantly boosts earnings. Individuals with some college, but no degree, earn an average weekly wage of $935, translating to an annual salary of $48,620. Those with an Associate's degree see a substantial increase in their weekly wages, averaging $1,005, which amounts to an annual income of $52,260. Even a two-year jump in education – from a high school diploma to an Associate's – nearly doubles the weekly wage, increasing income by nearly 50%.

Bachelor's and Beyond

Bachelors degree earners have an average weekly wage of $1,432, which is just under $75,000 annually. Those with a Master’s degree fare even better, earning an average of $1,661 per week, or more than $86,000 annually. This is $143 more per week than those without a high school diploma. Even more impressive, professionals with a doctoral degree earn an average of $2,083 per week, again just over $108,000 per year.

The Issue of Minimum Wage

It is true that the federal minimum wage in the U.S. and the minimum wage in many states are far from living wages. As of 2023, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, which equates to about $15,080 per year for a 40-hour work week. This is certainly not enough to live on, particularly in areas with a high cost of living.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that about 1.3% of the workforce in the U.S. (about 2.2 million workers) earn the federal minimum wage or less. While this figure is concerning and needs to be addressed, it should not be used to generalize the job market.

The Perceptions and Reality

While the cost of living in the U.S. averages around $38,266 per year, the average wage is significantly higher at $59,000. This means that while some jobs are indeed low-paying, a substantial number of jobs are more than enough to meet the average cost of living in the U.S.

For those in lower-paying jobs, there are several steps that can be taken to improve their financial situation:
