Why There is Gender Segregation in Professional Chess

Why are there female-only categories in professional chess when the best female players can compete in regular tournaments alongside men? This question has puzzled many chess enthusiasts, including myself back when I was twelve years old and competing in the California State Girl's Chess Championships. Although it was exhilarating to win the largest pink trophy and be one of the only girls in my category, it also brought to light the reasons behind such gender segregation.
