Many people hold different opinions about the existence of God, driven by their individual beliefs and experiences. In this article, I will explore the concept of God through personal experiences, spiritual teachings, and the role of a spiritual master in illuminating the path to true understanding.

My Personal Journey and Insights

My name is Gladys Figueroa, and I have had a profound experience that led me to believe in the existence of a supreme being. In the year 2000, I witnessed four extraordinary visions while taking a break at work as a cashier in Orlando, Florida. The experiences began with a windy day and symbolic visualizations in the sky, differing from conventional religious teachings. These visions revealed symbols such as a pearly narrow path, a heavy red blood symbol, and majestic flames. These experiences left me deeply amazed, surprised, and enchanted, inspiring me to continue believing in God.

Philosophical Perspectives on God

The concept of God is subjective, and many people hold different opinions based on personal experiences, traditions, and beliefs. As the ancient Indian text, the Kena Upanishad, states:

yasyāmata tasya mata mata yasya na veda sa

avijāta vijānatā vijātam avijānatām

Whoever denies having any opinion of his own about the Supreme Truth is correct in his opinion whereas one who has his own opinion about the Supreme does not know Him. He is unknown to those who claim to know Him and can only be known by those who do not claim to know Him.

This quote highlights the importance of humility and the recognition that our opinions about God may be illusions. The Bhagavad Gita also emphasizes the role of a spiritual master in imparting true knowledge about God:

eva paramparā-prāptam it speech from a guru passed down through an unbroken chain of authority, teaches that genuine spiritual knowledge comes from a qualified guru.

It is through the guidance of a genuine spiritual master that one can transcend illusion and realize the true nature of God. Adherence to materialistic opinions and sensory experiences is compared to a vicious trap in the Bhagavad Gita and other Vedic texts:

man-māyā-mohita-dhiya puruā puruarabhanreyo vadanty anekānta yathā-karma yathā-ruci

The intelligence of human beings is bewildered by My illusory potency and thus as per their individual activities and tastes they speak in innumerable ways about what is actually the truth.

Here, the idea is that our inherent desires and natures lead us to make different interpretations of reality, many of which are based on illusions. The true knowledge of God can only be obtained by those who do not claim to know Him and who humbly seek guidance from a self-realized spiritual master.

Importance of a Spiritual Master

The importance of having a spiritual master cannot be overstated. As stated in the Bhagavad Gita:

naia tarkena matir āpaneyā proktānyenaiva su-jānāya preha

Dear Naciketā, 'This realization my dear boy cannot be acquired by mundane logic. An exceptionally qualified spiritual master must speak it to a knowledgeable disciple.

A spiritual master transcends the limitations of the mind and can reveal the true nature of reality, something that cannot be achieved through logical reasoning alone. The only true knowledge about God comes from a guru who has realized God through divine mercy. As the Katha Upanishad states:

vidyā upaniada lokā sūtrāy anuvyākhyānāni vyākhyānānīa

As smoke comes from a fire made when damp wood is placed on it, the Rg Veda, Sāma Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda, Purāas, Itihāsas, Vidyās, Upaniads, lokas, sūtras, vyākhyās, commentary or explanation, and anuvyākhyās, sub-commentary, further explanation, come from the breathing of the Supreme Lord.

This passage emphasizes that the knowledge of God is a revelation from the Supreme Lord, passed down through the teachings of a self-realized guru. The Vedic literatures, their commentaries, and sub-commentaries offer the highest form of knowledge, which can only be understood by those who have been blessed by a spiritual master.

The Role of Humility and Surrender in Spiritual Journey

The ultimate truth can only be realized by those who approach a spiritual master with humility and a willingness to surrender their ego. As the Bhagavad Gita poignantly states:

tad viddhi praipātena paripranena sevayānupadekyanti te jāna jāninas tattva-darina

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

Humility is key to receiving divine knowledge, as it allows one to transcend personal biases and opinions. The realization of God is a mercy from the Supreme Lord and not a result of one’s speculations or mental gymnastics:

nāyam ātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā rutenanyam evaia vute tena labhyas tasyaia ātmā vivute tanū svām

The Supreme Lord is not obtained by expert explanations by vast intelligence nor even by much hearing. He is obtained only by one whom He Himself chooses. To such a person He manifests His own form.

This underscores the idea that genuine spiritual knowledge cannot be acquired through our own efforts alone but must be bestowed upon us by the Divine. Sincere and humble seekers may one day attain the fortune of realizing God through the guidance of a self-realized guru.

In conclusion, the path to understanding God is a humble and sincere journey that requires the guidance of a spiritual master. By recognizing the limitations of our own opinions and surrendering to the wisdom of a guru, we can transcend illusion and experience the divine presence in our lives.
