The Overlooked Privileges of Canadian Life
The Overlooked Privileges of Canadian Life
Residents of Canada enjoy a multitude of privileges that often go unnoticed. From universal healthcare to a multicultural society, these elements contribute to a high quality of life that is sometimes taken for granted. The story of a South African delegation visiting a Canadian government program provides a stark contrast to illustrate the immense freedom and security Canadians enjoy daily.
Universal Healthcare: A Standard in Canada
Many Canadians assume they will receive medical care freely at the point of service, a benefit not always available in other countries. This universal healthcare system ensures that all residents have access to necessary medical services without the financial burden. However, this privilege is not always recognized or appreciated. It is an example of the significant standard of living that Canadians take for granted.
Natural Beauty and Multiculturalism: Appreciation Underrated
The vast landscapes of mountains, forests, lakes, and national parks are often taken for granted despite their global recognition. Similarly, Canada's multiculturalism, which celebrates and preserves diverse cultural heritages, is widely accepted but not always fully appreciated. The rich cultural tapestry that defines the nation is a significant advantage that people might not fully understand the value of.
Safety and Stability
Security and stability are other key components of Canadian life. Many Canadians enjoy a sense of safety that allows them to live without fear of violence or civil unrest. This freedom from daily threats is a privilege that is not shared by all. Stories and accounts from oppressed countries, like South Africa during apartheid, highlight the stark contrast and the immense freedom Canadians have on a daily basis. This safety is taken for granted, as people are not accustomed to the same level of fear that affects those in less stable regions.
Education and Clean Environment
The quality public education system, including post-secondary options, is often viewed as a given. Moreover, the clean air and water perks of Canada are taken for granted. These elements are crucial for the overall quality of life but may not be fully recognized or appreciated. Access to clean and safe environments is a privilege that many residents do not fully realize they have.
Freedom of Speech and Rights
The protection of civil liberties and human rights is fundamental in Canada, although it is a reality that residents may not always actively appreciate. The freedom to speak openly and the reassurance of legal protections are everyday privileges that many of us take for granted.
A Personal Reflection
One of the clearest examples of how privileged we are comes from a personal experience. Several years ago, I was involved in a program about delivering excellence in government. South African visitors came to learn about our success and how it was achieved. After our visit to the office, we went to a nearby restaurant where a friend remarked, 'This is like a fairytale. I cannot believe we are sitting out in the open with people passing by.'
Though apartheid had ended, South Africa was still seen as unsafe for many. Residents lived in guarded compounds with guns on their seats and did not stop at four-way stops for fear of being targeted. Their relief at feeling secure in Canada was almost unimaginable to me. We do not need to worry about our life being in danger when we get into a car or walk down our streets. This level of freedom and security is what truly defines our privilege in Canada.
We are fortunate to live in a country where these privileges are the norm. While we may not always recognize or appreciate the full extent of these benefits, it is essential to acknowledge them and cherish the safe and stable environment that Canadians have created.
