The Most Influential Figures in My School Years

Growing up, the people who influenced me the most were those who saw my potential and those who challenged me to become better. From grammar school to my college days, the following figures have played a significant role in shaping my journey both personally and professionally.

Favorite Teachers and Their Impact

Among my many teachers, there are a few who stand out for their unique contributions. My high school drama teacher, the English language trainer Mr. Ram Kumar, an American history teacher, and my English teacher James were instrumental in my growth and development. Each of these individuals brought something special to the table, pushing me to think critically and to push my boundaries.

Challenges and Triumphs

Let's start with high school drama teacher, who was a figure I often reflected upon during my growth. This man challenged me with his strict standards, demanding that I grow in the strength of my character. Every day in his class was an assault on my soul, requiring me to be fearless and honest. Yet, when I was able to meet those expectations, I often emerged as the star of the show. As a freshman, these experiences left an indelible impression on me, teaching me the value of hard work and resilience.

Power of Encouragement

Then there is Mr. Ram Kumar, my Communicative English Trainer, who played a crucial role in my personal development. His encouragement and support fostered a love for English that would eventually lead me to pursue my education in Belgrade and London. Despite the general skepticism I faced due to my early struggles with school, he believed in my potential and motivated me to achieve greatness.

Pioneering Figures in History

Outside the realm of English, an American history teacher and a professor of American history in college also made an impact on me. These educators instilled a deeper understanding and appreciation for history, enriching my perspective and shaping my thinking. In many ways, their lessons became a cornerstone of my educational journey.

Inspiring English Teacher James

Among all my teachers, James, my English teacher, holds a special place in my heart. He was not only a master of the English language but also a deeply dedicated educator. His real name was Jakob Salechich, a Croat living in Belgrade who had survived imprisonment in Auschwitz during World War II. His experiences gave him a unique perspective that he shared with his students through the Advanced Learners’ Oxford English Dictionary. This teacher was no ordinary man; he was a radiant, slightly peculiar gentleman, and he was the inspiration behind my love for the English language.

Impact on My Life Choices

James's influence extended far beyond the classroom. He was the reason I pursued my studies in English literature and later decided to go to London. While in London, I worked as a maid, a private nurse, and a pancake restaurant waitress, and eventually returned to Belgrade. My decision to leave my studies after disappointment with the lack of quality teaching prompted me to return to Belgrade, where I eventually became a lawyer.

Life's Journey and Reflections

Though I reflect on the road I could have taken in London, I ultimately chose to go back home, where I embraced the love and support of my family. Marriage brought about a new chapter, but the bond with my son, and his two little sons, remains the cornerstone of my life.

Lessons Learnt

Each of these teachers taught me valuable lessons that have stayed with me. Whether it was about resilience, the power of words, or the importance of passion and determination, the impact of these educators cannot be overstated. They are the unsung heroes of my life, and I am eternally grateful for their guidance and influence.

As I reflect on my school days, I realize that every experience, good or bad, has contributed to the individual I am today. It is the combination of encouragement and challenging mistakes that has shaped my character and led me on the path of persistence and success.
