Leaping Beyond the Glitter: The Hidden Struggles of Being an Entrepreneur

As someone who has founded three companies in just five years, generated several crores in revenue, and featured in almost every top media platform, you might think my life revolves around constant success and glamour. But the reality is far from the picture most people have. Here, I delving into the realities of running startups and entrepreneurship.

The Glamour vs. The Grind

People see me flying every second day and comment, “Wow, you are so much traveling.” They see me in a Mercedes or BMW and exclaim, “You are lucky, and all.” They see me meet with ministers, IAS officials, and big entrepreneurs and say, “You have an awesome network.” Yet, they don’t understand the harsh realities of the life an entrepreneur leads.

Life as an Entrepreneur: The Hidden Struggles

As an entrepreneur, I often forget the last proper conversation I had with my best friends. I can barely remember the last time I watched a movie or went out with my friends. I usually miss out on 20-30 lunches and have to remind myself to eat properly. It has been a month since I had a decent night’s sleep. Keeping up with the demand requires constant upskilling and being on the edge of where the industry is going.

The Night I Stayed Up

Here’s a picture of my room last night around 2 AM. I crocheted shoes all night to meet an order deadline and avoid disappointing my clients. This is what typical nights look like. Under the glamour, it's a whirlwind of demands and late nights.

Striking a Balance: Entrepreneurship and Other Commitments

Being a medical student and an entrepreneur is one of the most challenging tasks. I rely heavily on the COVID-19 pandemic for my schooling. If not for the pandemic, I would be juggling both at the same time. In Nigeria, where I am based, it would have been nearly impossible. I carve out time for crafting pillows, making bracelets, and playing music between my medical studies and craft work. Music serves as both a passion and a source of income. I hold music classes for my colleagues at medical school, providing them with a bit of respite and an additional way to earn.

Combining Dreams and Reality

Is it possible to balance everything? Absolutely. Passion is key. I combine everything—my studies, my business, and my passion for music. And if I can do it, you can do it too. It's about finding a path that works for you, balancing the demands of the outside world with your inner passions.

Conclusion

Being an entrepreneur is about more than just glamour. It's about the hard work, the late nights, and the constant striving to meet demands. But it's also about finding joy in the little moments and making the most of every second. If you are considering diving into entrepreneurship, remember that the path is filled with both challenges and rewards. Embrace the struggle, and let your passion guide you.
