What things are easy for computers to do that are hard for humans? This question often stirs debate. It seems unfair to task humans with navigating the complexities of modern life when machines could purportedly handle many of the heavy lifting. However, a closer examination reveals that while computers excel in certain domains, humans remain irreplaceable in others.

Case Studies of Human Challenges Measured Against Machine Efficiency

Consider the following tasks:

Get to a grocery store that’s 2 miles away and back in 10 minutes. Ask a question of someone who lives in the middle of North America and get an answer immediately. Listen to music from Italy. Sort through fifty years of tax records in half-a-second. Hover over Ukraine watching for enemy fire. See our solar system from outside of it. Determine the molecular composition of an unknown chemical.

These tasks highlight the seeming capabilities of machines compared to humans. Yet, as any technologist knows, these tasks often involve not just technology, but a human's ability to program and use that technology effectively. This article explores what makes these things hard for humans while being easy for computers.

Technology and Human Control

It is a common misconception that technology does things independently. In reality, technology is merely a tool, a facilitator enabled by humans. Technology itself cannot make decisions or think—humans do. The phrase 'guns do not kill people, people kill people with guns' is illustrative. Similarly, while machines can perform tasks swiftly and accurately, they do so within the bounds defined by human programming and input.

The Limitations of AI in Natural Language Processing

One of the most significant challenges for AI lies in its inability to understand and respond appropriately to natural human language. Unlike most humans, AI chatbots struggle to respond appropriately in text-based conversations when faced with idioms, metaphors, rhetorical questions, and sarcasm. Small talk and contextual understanding are particularly difficult areas for machines.

Basic Tasks Still Elusive for Most People

Recently, I volunteered as a 'computer coach' at our local library. In one session, I observed that many people are still learning fundamental computer skills like selecting text, copy/paste operations, and keyboard shortcuts. These basic functions, though simple for many, are still mysteries for others. Enhancing these skills can significantly improve a user's experience with technology.

What Things Are Easy for Computers to Do That Are Hard for Humans

The most humbling area of computer capabilities is basic arithmetic. Computers can perform basic arithmetic with precision and speed, making them ideal for tasks that involve number crunching. However, translating human language and thought processes into algorithms remains a significant challenge. The complexity of natural language and the need for nuanced understanding are areas that humans excel in, while computers can only do what they are programmed to do.

While technology offers incredible capabilities, it is crucial to remember that it is a tool, not a replacement for human intelligence and creativity. Humans should leverage technology to augment their abilities, focusing on tasks that require empathy, creativity, and critical thinking.
