The Art of Cold Calling: Breaking the Ice and Embracing Fairness

Breaking the ice is a fundamental skill that transcends numerous disciplines, and selling is no exception. Cold calling is an excellent practice for honing this ability, allowing one to learn how to make a prompt, brief, and remarkable first impression without the luxury of face-to-face interaction. This skill hones a deep understanding of various aspects of human communication, from body language to tone. As we engaging in cold calling becomes a continuous process, our mental and charismatic capacities maintain a youthfulness that is increasingly rare.

My 30-Year Journey in Sales

My professional journey began as a young canvasser in England, knocking on doors to canvass for addresses of potential clients. Over the years, this experience led me to cold calling in Germany to demonstrate and secure orders for self-regenerating plastic copy film. This initial phase taught me valuable lessons in sales and communication, leading to a promotion to sales manager.

In this role, I had the opportunity to teach others the art of cold calling, selling typewriter ribbons, and later moving into computer printer ribbons and toner cartridges. My experience spanned Germany, Austria, and eventually the entire German-speaking Europe. This expansive network allowed me to adapt and grow, leading to my founding of my own company, where I specialized in selling toner packs and compatible imaging supplies. The reusability of toner cartridges was particularly dear to me, as it aligned with my commitment to fairness and the sustainable use of resources.

Personal Reflections: Embracing Fairness

Even today, at 77 and semi-retired, I take pride in the value of fairness that has been a predominant characteristic of my life. While my professional endeavors may have changed, the essence of fairness has remained constant. For many years, I worked in a commission-based system, which allowed for a fair distribution of wealth and motivated individuals to work effectively towards their goals.

One of my earliest experiences was as a canvasser, where I sold economical block installations of electrical central heating systems. My next phase involved cold calling to promote self-regenerating plastic copy film in Germany. From there, I moved into sales management, teaching others the skills I had learned. Later, I branched out into custom supplies, breaking monopolies and creating competition, which allowed me to continue adapting and evolving. These experiences not only provided a fulfilling career but also a life well-lived, filled with travel, meetings, and the joy of cold calling.

Experiences and Wisdom

Cold calling has been a transformative journey for me, one that has taught me the importance of effective communication and adaptability. It provided a unique opportunity to reach out to different places and people, witnessing firsthand the diversity of human experiences. As I look back on more than 50 years of experience, I can confidently say that I thoroughly enjoyed the fair and challenging nature of this work.

While my professional life may have come full circle, the lessons learned from cold calling remain relevant. The principles of fairness, effective communication, and adaptability can be applied in all areas of life. Whether in personal or professional settings, these skills continue to be valuable and essential for success.
