My Approach to Reading: Always for Fun

My goal is always to have fun, not necessarily to read a specific number of pages every day. Sometimes, if it's an easy and entertaining read, I might finish a whole book in a single day. Examples include mystery novels or fascinating history or political books. Recently, I re-read an old Perry Mason novel by Erle Stanley Gardner. It was refreshing to reflect on the flavor of his books, which I had not read since I was a teenager. Gardner was much more politically conservative than I had perceived as a younger reader. This experience was eye-opening and enjoyable.

Diving into Detailed Reads

Another example is The Secret Man by Bob Woodward. I read around 240 pages, a task I usually enjoy. This book delves deeply into the mystery of Watergate and the identity of 'Deep Throat.' Listening to the motives and the history surrounding the Watergate scandal was both intriguing and educational. I intend to revisit the book in a few weeks, this time with a deeper analysis and interpretation.

Slow and Steady: Reading Science Books

For science books, it can take me a year to read one, and I often revisit the same books. A case in point is physicist Richard Feynman. I read his lectures multiple times because his explanations are initially clear but often reveal new insights with each revisit. Fast readers like me can sometimes miss the nuances; slow but thorough reading is essential for true comprehension.

Reading, whether a quick weekend mystery or a detailed biography, is not just about finishing a book. It is about extracting valuable insights, enjoying the journey, and being open to new perspectives. Sometimes a book can read like 'chewing gum,' leaving us unable to recall its content the next morning. But real reading, the kind that sticks, takes time and effort.

As humans, we can be like dogs, coming back to chew on our toys again and again. Regular engagement with books, be they old favorites or new discoveries, will enrich your life and broaden your horizons. So, do not be deterred by a high daily reading goal. Instead, focus on developing a routine that brings joy and learning to your daily life.
