Setting Reading Goals: A Path to a Lifelong Love of Books
Setting Reading Goals: A Path to a Lifelong Love of Books
As a book lover, I understand the importance of setting reading goals. This article explores the journey of a dedicated reader who aims to consume 4-5 books each month, both through reading and audiobooks. Reading is both a personal goal and a method to explore various fields of knowledge, from science to biography.
Reflecting on My Reading Journey
My passion for books began at a young age, somewhere around 26-27 years old. I tasted the profound amazement of reading and its ability to provide immense satisfaction. However, reality often gets in the way, and reading does not always take precedence. This realization led me to set reading goals to ensure I engage more consistently with books.
The Impact of Reading Goals
Currently, my goal is to read 100 books this year. I have recently completed several biographies of great scientists and thinkers, such as James Clerk Maxwell and Enrico Fermi. Maxwell’s exploration of the speed of light is just one aspect of his genius, while Fermi’s comprehensive knowledge of various fields is well-documented.
I am also taking a break from these intense biographies by reading Agatha Christie's autobiography, which offers a glimpse into a historic era of her life and career. My reading choices reflect my current interests, such as a dislike for dishonesty in politics, which led me to read about George C. Marshall and the Marshall Plan.
The Digital Reading Habit
Books these days can sometimes feel weighed down by 'filler,' making them less pleasurable. For many book lovers, this dissatisfaction can be remedied by setting specific reading goals and monitoring progress through tools like Goodreads or reading apps.
The Power of Reading Goals for Motivation
Research indicates that setting reading goals can significantly increase the frequency and enjoyment of reading. In a recent article by avid readers, some mentioned hiding books to show the vast number they have. I admire those with extensive book collections, but for me, setting goals is sufficient to keep reading on track.
This year, I managed to read only seven books from July to October, achieving this solely because I had set a goal to read 100 books. This goal kept me motivated and ensured that even when priorities shifted, I still made time for reading.
The Future of Reading Goals
My ultimate aspiration is to no longer need to set reading goals, as reading becomes a natural part of my daily routine. Looking forward, I am exploring the concept of dedicating three hours daily to reading, especially during winter when the weather is conducive to longer reading sessions. Achieving this goal will make reading a more integrated and habit-forming part of my life.
In summary, setting reading goals is a significant step towards a lifelong love of books. Whether it's through monthly consumption, biographies of influential figures, or staying away from dishonesty in politics, these goals keep the joy of reading alive and thriving.
