Reflections on Life Decisions: When Plans Don't Always Align
Have you ever had a plan that didn't work out as expected? In my journey, there have been several instances where my carefully laid plans took unexpected turns. These experiences taught me valuable lessons and ultimately shaped who I am today. This article delves into some of these life decisions and why they didn't align with my initial plans.
The Ambition to Become a Doctor
From a young age, my ambition was to become a doctor. When asked about future aspirations, I often heard peers express desires to be doctors, sitting in white coats with stethoscopes in hand. However, my journey towards medicine took a different path.
Growing up, I was praised for my exceptional academic performance and was often seen as the top performer among my cousins. My teachers and parents frequently commented about my academic potential. In high school, I excelled, with a consistent average of 97, 95, and 96. However, as I entered the 9th grade, a significant change took place. My struggles with mathematics began to affect my overall performance. My Urdu marks in mathematics dropped to 86. This led to a family reaction filled with disappointment and scrutiny, which further dampened my resolve to pursue medicine.
To combat the drop in my math marks, I redoubled my efforts and managed to secure a 96% in my 10th grade exams. Despite this, my interest in medicine waned due to my fear of complex operations and postmortems. At that point, my dreams of becoming a doctor seemed distant.
The Pursuit of IT and the Unforeseen Twist
Feeling demotivated by my misadventures, I decided to pursue Information Technology (IT) instead. I was a big fan of IT and wanted to match the marks of medical aspirants. However, during my 11th-grade exams, I encountered a critical challenge. In physics, I focused too much on trying to win over the checker with extra diagrams and excess explanations. In the midst of this strategy, the time ran out entirely, and I forgot the crucial questions I had prepared. As a result, my physics score suffered, and my overall result was a 79% - a significant drop.
The news was devastating, and when my biology teacher revealed that I was top in her class, my disappointment was immense. I had the opportunity to share my results with my family, but I decided against it, fearing their disappointed reaction.
Unexpected Cancellation of Exams and the Shift to Law
During my 12th-grade exams, the unexpected arrival of the global pandemic necessitated the cancellation of the exams. The education sector decided to equate the 11th-grade marks with the 12th-grade results. So, with a 91% in the 11th grade, my figure was reduced to 81% in the 12th grade. This adjustment further impacted my plans, but I kept a positive outlook and considered alternative options.
Initially, I strongly believed that pursuing a degree in chemistry would be the right choice. However, I soon realized that my passion lay in the field of law. After some hesitation and considering the advice of my elders, I began to prepare for the law entrance exams and successfully qualified.
Concluding Thoughts
