Pursuing Your Passion: A Journey from Depression to Fulfillment
Pursuing Your Passion: A Journey from Depression to Fulfillment
Many of us have been there—graduating with a degree that didn't align with our interests and struggling to find a fulfilling career. In this journey, we often face a series of challenges that can lead to feelings of depression and loss of self-confidence. Today, I want to explore the path of pursuing your passion and how it can positively transform your life.
Experiencing the Consequences of Misaligned Career Paths
My story began with graduating in 2014 with two degrees that I wasn't particularly interested in. After working in accounting and finance, I found myself unemployed and depressed. It was a difficult period where I lost my job and experienced a significant decline in my self-confidence. The situation was compounded by the economic challenges that started around 2019 and continued into the present, with recession, the pandemic, and geopolitical uncertainties adding to the mix.
Learning from Hardships and Making a Leap
After about six months of reflecting and self-discovery, I decided to change career paths. I worked in the mortgage industry for a few years before facing another setback due to a lack of interest. At that point, I decided to take a bold step and pursue something I truly enjoyed, even if it meant accepting a lower salary. Today, I am an electrician, and I genuinely enjoy most days. This change didn't come easily, but it was worth it.
The Value of Additional Skills and Qualifications
While my lack of interest in my initial degrees certainly played a role in my difficulties, it's important to acknowledge that external factors such as economic recessions, the aftermath of the pandemic, and geopolitical instability also had significant impacts on the job market. In these challenging times, acquiring additional qualifications and upgrading your skills through training can be crucial. There are many competitive exams and certifications available, such as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams or roles in banks and insurance industries.
Breaking Free from Negative Cycles
It's easy to fall into a negative cycle of depression and lack of confidence, especially when you find yourself in a career that doesn't align with your interests. However, it's important to take control of your life and make changes that bring you joy and fulfillment. Take any job that interests you, and do your best in that position. If you find that you enjoy the work, stay with it. If not, keep searching while securing new opportunities. Always leave your current job on a positive note to foster a good reputation.
Seeking Guidance and Support
When making changes in your life, it's essential to seek guidance and support. Praying and asking God for what you need can provide comfort and strength. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to seek peace and submission to God's will, and the Serenity Prayer encourages us to accept what we cannot change, change what we can, and be wise enough to distinguish the difference. As 1 John 5:14-15 emphasizes, this confidence comes from asking God according to His will.
In summary, while the path to fulfilling your dreams may be challenging, it is incredibly rewarding. By taking action, acquiring new skills, and seeking support, you can overcome depression and find a career that brings you joy and fulfillment.
