Promotion Pathways in Indian Railways: From Group C to Group B
In the Indian Railways, the promotion from Group C to Group B typically requires a minimum of 5 years of service in Group C. RRB NTPC Exam for Non-Technical Posts
RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) conducts the RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Posts Company) Exam for the recruitment of candidates for Non-Technical Posts in Railways Group C. These employees can later be promoted to Group B through two main pathways:
Limited Departmental Competitive Exam (LDCE)
The first pathway is the LDCE, an exam designed specifically for promoting Group C employees to Group B. Eligibility criteria for the LDCE include:
Having served in Pay Band PB29-30000 with GP 4200 and above At least 5 years in the grade (including services in the corresponding pre-revised grades)Candidates must secure at least 60 marks in the written exam. Subsequently, they need to pass a viva-voce to be considered for promotion to the Group B category.
Seniority and Suitability Basis
The second pathway is based on seniority and suitability. The remaining posts in Group B will be filled based on seniority and overall suitability.
Prescribed Percentage for Promotion via Written Exam
Prescribed percentage for candidates in nominated Group C categories are to be filled by promotion of Group D employees through a written exam. This process is compulsory for Group D staff who complete 3 years of regular service on December 31, except for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, for whom there is no minimum service condition.
Group D Promotion Categories
There are several categories where Group D staff are eligible for promotion:
Technical: Assistant Protector, Keyman/Keymate, Technician, Fireman Non-Technical: Account Clerk, Personnel Branch Clerk, Commercial Clerk, TC (Train Clerk), Timekeeper, Fuel Checker, Store Clerk, MarkerWritten Test and Evaluation Criteria
The written test is divided into two parts:
Part A: Test the working knowledge of the Railway servant in the English language.
Part B: Measure the general standard of intelligence, proficiency, and knowledge through questions in Arithmetic, General Knowledge, and Railway matters specific to the candidate's experience.
Marks are allocated as follows:
Written Test: 85 marks Record of Service: 15 marksTo ensure a comprehensive assessment, the question paper will include:
Questions to test the working knowledge of the Railway servant in the English language. General knowledge questions relevant to Railway matters and the candidate's experience.The examination is conducted to assess the candidate's proficiency and suitability for the promotion to Group C.
