It's easy to focus on the drawbacks and uncomfortable changes that arise when someone or a group of individuals alter the status quo. However, let's turn our attention to the positive changes and the perks that still define the workplace experience for many. In a time when flexibility and perks are more valued than ever, it’s refreshing to reflect on what we still have to appreciate about our workplace environments.

Let's start by acknowledging the evolving nature of the workplace. Companies adapt to the changing dynamics of the workforce, and as a result, perks can shift, for better or worse. Over the years, I've encountered several perks that, when enjoyed by all, brought joy and productivity to the team. However, when modifications were made based on individual actions, these perks often negatively impacted all employees.

Flexible Work Schedules

One of the most significant perks that are now in a state of flux is flexible work schedules. Flexible hours have long been a boon for many, providing the ability to balance personal and professional commitments. However, when a few employees started taking advantage of the flexibility to prolong their lunch breaks, it disrupted the system and led to resentment among team members.

A recent example involves two female brown-nosers in our department who began taking extended lunch breaks and returning to their desks at varying times. Instead of addressing the issue and setting clear guidelines, Human Resources implemented a new policy for the entire team. Now, a group of around 50 employees are clocking in and out for lunch, which has caused logistical and emotional strain for everyone. This change has led to frustration and reduced camaraderie within the team, illustrating the downside of divisive changes without clear communication.

Company Destinations and Workshops

Another perk that once brought a sense of fun and productivity to our workplace was company-sponsored outings and workshops. Whether it was a day trip to a museum or a skills workshop, these activities encouraged team bonding and skill development. Unfortunately, when these events became more exclusive or less frequently organized, the overall morale of the team suffered.

A specific incident involved a popular annual retreat that we had started to look forward to each year. However, when the leadership decided to limit participation, it felt unfair and demotivating, especially when the company began to offer similar events to only a select few employees. This privilege disparity sparked arguments and damaged team unity, highlighting the importance of inclusive perks.

Employee Recognition Programs

Employee recognition programs were another fantastic perk that provided a sense of achievement and appreciation. When all employees were recognized and rewarded for their contributions, it fostered a culture of respect and motivation. However, when these programs became a token gesture or were only offered to a few deserving employees, the morale of the rest of the team dropped.
