Nurturing Confidence: My Journey Through JBNSTS Junior Interview Experience
Finding oneself ready for an important interview can be daunting. I, a 2023 JBNSTS Junior Scholar, encountered such a situation, pitched by rigorous academic demands and subjective evaluations. This journey will delve into the intricacies of my interview experience, the challenges faced, and the key lessons that emerged, providing insight for those who aspire to secure similar accolades.
Challenges and Preparations
As a 11th-grade student, preparing for the JBNSTS Junior exam was not only challenging due to the vast syllabus but also compounded by personal anxiety. The simultaneous occurrence of these exams in 2023 heightened my stress levels, leading to a less-than-optimal preparation. Despite feeling under-prepared, I barely managed to attempt 10 out of 18 questions in the written exam, a testament to my initial doubts. Nevertheless, receiving the news that I had qualified for the interview was a stroke of immense relief and encouragement.
The interview was scheduled during my half-yearly exams, leading to further stress. Unlike the written exam, no definitive syllabus was provided. The key to success, as I discovered, was to prepare questions from a combination of grades, showcasing my understanding and strength in subjects of my choice. This flexibility allowed me to tailor the interview to my strengths, particularly in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Interview Day: A Nerve-wracking Experience
The day of the interview was calm, starting with a pleasant conversation with two friends I spotted in the waiting area. As I sat in the corridor awaiting my call, I let out a deep breath. Finally, I was summoned to a room where four professors from various subjects awaited me, each representing a unique blend of knowledge and expertise.
Verbal Warnings and Academic Curiosities
The interview began with friendly questions about my background, hobbies, and dreams. The Physical Science Professor, code-named P, initiated the conversation with questions regarding my school and interests. He asked about my favorite subjects to assess my academic inclination. Following him, the Chemistry Professor, C, enquired about my living situation and subject preferences. Notably, the Mathematics Professor, M, left the room after hearing my interest in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The Biology Professor, B, then introduced the portion of the interview that would be most challenging yet revealing.
Subject-Specific Questions and Insights
The Biology Professor began with a series of questions aimed at assessing my knowledge in Cell Biology and Plant Physiology. She asked detailed questions about the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), protein synthesis, and the origin of Mitochondria and Chloroplasts. When I struggled with some questions, I admitted my shortcomings, reflecting the importance of honesty in such evaluations.
The Chemistry Professor then asked me to draw benzene rings, a test of my understanding of organic chemistry. Although I made some errors, the clear logic I displayed impressed C. Following this, the Physics interview was less daunting, as I had better knowledge of topics such as Elasticity and Young’s Modulus, compared to Mechanics. This ease of answering allowed me to showcase my strengths effectively.
Conclusion and Lessons Learnt
The interview concluded with a warm and encouraging note from the professors. They handed me a chocolate bar and expressed their best wishes for my future endeavors in achieving my dreams. Reflecting on the experience, I realized the value of confidence and preparedness. While the outcome brought joy, I am aware that a more nuanced self-assessment would have boosted my confidence.
