Navigating the Performing Arts: Challenges and Success
Navigating the Performing Arts: Challenges and Success
Many aspiring performers dream of finding success in the performing arts world, particularly in acting. But what happens when those dreams seem harder to achieve than finding a normal job? This question brings to light several important aspects of pursuing a career in the performing arts.
The Reality of Pursuing Acting
While living in New York or Los Angeles and holding an MFA from one of the top acting schools may seem ideal, success in this industry is far from a guarantee. For many, the process can be demoralizing and mentally taxing. As someone with relevant experience, I can attest to the challenges of trying to make a living as an actor. Despite having training, experience, and talent, securing consistent work can be incredibly difficult.
The Business Side of Acting
The business side of the industry is a significant obstacle. It's a competition filled with countless individuals eager to take a small part. This competitive environment often brings out the worst in people and can lead to feelings of anonymity and desperation. Even with substantial training and talent, relationships and networking can play a crucial role in success. Nepotism and connections are often more important than skill or talent, especially for women.
The Myth of Talent and Consistency
Many new actors believe that if they do enough good work consistently, success will follow. However, this is often a misconception. Getting a role or being noticed is about more than just talent; it's about the ability to promote yourself and appeal to the business side of the industry. Most artists may lack the skills to be stellar business people, making networking and self-promotion essential for long-term success.
The Importance of Day Jobs
For many actors, day jobs are a necessity. Whether it's substitute teaching or any other job, these roles provide the financial stability to pursue auditions and dreams. In my experience, even a difficult day job can feel better than the constant stress of searching for acting roles. Teaching grade school kids in the inner city, even amidst challenging conditions, can be infinitely more fulfilling than obsessing over auditions.
Reevaluating Your Dreams
Is acting really the dream career it's portrayed to be? Many actors find that the reality of the industry is far different from the fantasies they held. Wanting to pursue a career in acting is understandable, but it's important to be realistic about the challenges and to work hard for whatever path you choose. If acting is your dream, then the effort and dedication are a must. In the end, no one will give you anything for free in this field.
Conclusion
So, if you're considering the performing arts as a career, remember the importance of the business side of the industry. Success is not solely dependent on talent, but also on relationships, self-promotion, and persistence. Whatever your dream career may be, working hard and being realistic will help you achieve your goals.
