My personal experience began at the age of 12, when my teacher emphasized the importance of reflecting on why one might shun prayer. The narrative she shared was, if you do not pray, you should ponder why you do not wish to do so, and consider the consequences of neglecting this practice.
The Significance of Reflection and Intention
Following the advice given by my teacher, I initially continued to delay praying or depend on my mood. However, the constant questions about Allah's anger, his desire for me to pray, and his wish for me to be his favorite companion started permeating my consciousness. These questions, particularly the Namaz Azaan (prayer call), led me to contemplate my intentions and seek guidance from Allah through duae (supplication).
The turning point came when I watched a video on the punishment of the grave, which instilled a profound sense of fear and accountability. I began to pray and cry in fear of disobeying Allah. This experience taught me that Allah provides guidance and support when one has a sincere intention. It is through being conscious of our Creator that we can find the strength to overcome the obstacles to prayer.
Practical Steps to Overcome the Barrier of Not Wanting to Pray
For those struggling with the desire to pray, several practical steps can be taken to regain their spiritual connection. One effective method is to join the congregation for at least one prayer in the mosque. This act of communal worship can help overcome the barrier of personal feelings of inadequacy or reluctance. Additionally, dedicating time for Tahajjud, the late night prayer, for at least four rakats (units of prayer), can also be beneficial. Engaging in Quran recitation can further reinforce the spiritual connection.
A particular Surah that is known to weaken Shaytan is Surah Baqarah. Reciting this Surah is a powerful tool for spiritual fortification. If recitation is daunting, listening to its recitation online can serve as a supplement. However, the most effective result comes from personal recitation, as it allows for a deeper connection with the words.
As you embark on this journey, remember that Allah is always watching over you. With sincerity and intention, you will soon find yourself drawn to the sacred act of prayer, eagerly rushing towards your Creator.
