Navigating the Challenges of UPSC CSE 2020 Prelims: A Candid Journey
Navigating the Challenges of UPSC CSE 2020 Prelims: A Candid Journey
India's Union Public Service Commission's (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is no walk in the park, and my personal experience in the 2020 Prelims serves as a testament to the challenges and triumphs that come with it. After graduating from an average IIT in 2019, I received an offer from a multinational company (MNC) to work in the UK. However, destiny had other plans, and I decided to take a leap of faith by preparing for the CSE full-time.
Preparation and Challenges
With a vision in mind, I joined Vajiram and Ravi's prestigious UPSC preparation program in Delhi, beginning my journey on August 28, 2019. Throughout this process, I faced numerous highs and lows, but my determination to succeed remained unchanged. It was a challenging journey, but I never let my spirits falter.
My preparation strategy was effective. I cleared the state-level Public Service Commission (UP PCS) Pre examination within four months and was preparing for the Mains when the 2020 Prelims arrived. The 4th of October 2020, known hereafter as D-Day, was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. I attempted around 57 mock tests from various institutions, which helped me average a score between 114-120.
On the day of the exam, I found the paper to be challenging, particularly for Paper 2 (CSAT). My anxiety got the best of me, and I experienced brain fade, leading to an unsatisfactory performance. It was disheartening to realize that despite my academic background, I struggled with simple calculations due to lack of preparation for CSAT. I ended up attempting 74 questions in total, with only 61 correct, resulting in a score of 113.42.
Emotional Response and Reflection
The shock and disappointment of underperformance were palpable. The following days were filled with tears, but my parents supported me through my emotional turmoil. They reminded me that at least I knew where I needed to improve and that no success is predetermined.
Future Plans and Preparations
With the aim of not repeating past mistakes, I have planned to continue my preparation for the 2021 CSE Prelims. My immediate focus is on strengthening my weak areas, particularly in the CSAT. Based on my analysis, a 2.5-month course seems promising to re-accustom myself to the format and content of the exam.
Post-exam, I met several aspirants who also perceived the paper as tough and unexpectedly challenging. The sense of disbelief and shock was evident, with a few opting to leave the examination hall early. While the exact feedback might vary, we anticipate more detailed insights from answer keys and further candid opinions from aspirants in the coming days.
Now, as I embark on this next chapter of my journey, I am more determined than ever to succeed. The road is long, but with the right guidance and determination, I believe success is within reach. Here’s to the next chapter of my UPSC CSE preparation adventure!
