Navigating Professional Challenges: Male LPN and RN Experiences in Nursing
As a male LPN or RN, navigating a predominantly female profession can present unique challenges. In this article, we explore the experiences of male nurses and discuss the impact of discrimination and support within the nursing community.
Discrimination within Nursing:
Discrimination against male nurses is not a rare occurrence. One such instance occurred during nursing school, where I was not initially allowed to participate in the OB/GYN rotation. This decision was made by the Head Nurse, although a female nurse on the OB/GYN floor disagreed. Additionally, some older nurses questioned the appropriateness of men in the nursing profession.
Positive Experiences:
Despite these challenges, the majority of my nursing colleagues have been supportive and understanding. Many of the doctors I have worked with have shown considerable appreciation and respect. In fact, many male nurses have stated that they are on a first-name basis with their colleagues, reflecting a collaborative and supportive work environment.
B.O.B. Factor:
To describe the unique challenges faced by male nurses, some have coined the term "B.O.B." which stands for "Bunch Of Bitches." This term, while not flattering, highlights the particular difficulties that male nurses may face, particularly from their female colleagues. However, it's important to note that this term is not universally used and some believe it perpetuates negativity.
Successful Male Nurses:
Many male nurses not only overcome these challenges but also distinguish themselves as professionals. For example, 99 percent of male nurses have been praised for being knowledgeable, skilled, and caring. Moreover, their unique perspectives greatly benefit the profession, as they offer different approaches and solutions to various health care issues.
Leadership and Development:
Male nurses have also demonstrated strong leadership qualities. In one instance, a male nurse transitioned from an inexperienced position to become the nurse in charge. While some challenges arose, the female team ultimately recognized their role in not equipping him with the necessary skills and worked together to find a resolution.
