Navigating Post-College Career Paths: Insights from a Law Practitioner
After completing high school and university, many individuals face the pivotal question of what their next steps should be. Understanding the complexities of making informed career choices and exploring various paths is crucial in determining a fulfilling future.
Personal Journey: From E-commerce to Law
My journey began with a clear path in mind for college, aiming for a four-year university somewhere in my state with a major aligned with my interests in law, specifically criminal justice or criminology. Additionally, I considered pursuing sociology to complement my studies.
While I had a general idea of where I wanted to start, I wasn't entirely sure about my long-term plans. As college progressed, I envisioned myself becoming a criminal investigator or furthering my education through law school.
Church Mission and Early Law Interest
What I didn't predict was the profound impact a church mission would have on my career trajectory. During my sophomore year in college, I joined what was then known as the LDS/Mormon Church and aspired to serve a two-year mission. Initially, my bishop advised me to prioritize my education, suggesting that I could serve meaningfully with more experience and understanding as a Mormon.
After graduating from college, I dedicated two years of my life to serving the church in the Michigan-Lansing Mission. It was during this time that I first observed the workings of the legal profession. My companion and I would visit law firms and ask lawyers about setting up Family Nights for their families. We also provided moral support during courtroom experiences. It was during these interactions that I began to develop a passion for the practice of law.
Emerging as a Lawyer and Advocate
Post-mission, I attended the law school at Brigham Young University and eventually became a lawyer. My career spanned over 30 years, both as a trial lawyer and a corporate lawyer. My educational pathway in college, majoring in speech-communication with a minor in theater, prepared me well for the public speaking and communication challenges I faced in my legal career.
As my faith evolved, I became the personal lawyer for a man I believe is the only True Messenger on Earth. This position offered me the opportunity to critique the Mormon Church, both through public speeches and a current federal district court lawsuit. Although I am now retired, I continue to act as a "pro se" lawyer with two fellow plaintiffs.
Reflections on Career Choice
My experience underscores the importance of exploring different avenues and staying open to new opportunities. My path from e-commerce to law practice may seem unconventional, but each step along the way provided valuable skills and insights.
For those currently navigating post-college career paths, it's essential to consider your interests, values, and long-term goals. Whether you're setting up an e-commerce shop or pursuing a legal career, stay tenacious, seek guidance, and never underestimate the potential impact of your decisions.
