Navigating Car Breakdowns: Real Stories and Observations

Every driver's nightmare—stopping suddenly with a disabled car, especially when you're running late. In this article, I share two personal experiences of car breakdowns and the varying reactions from other drivers. These stories highlight the importance of car maintenance and awareness on the road.

The Year 2000 Incident: A Decade-Old Memory

Deciding how to start this article, I wanted to tell a personal story from the year 2000 when I was working at an optical plant about 10 miles from my home, starting at 5 am. My journey to work was a time-scheduled ritual, with an early wake-up call and a rushed morning to avoid being late.

My trusty 1985 Nesson small pickup truck, a beloved yet battle-scarred vehicle, had a few issues: a water leak from improperly fitted parts and a troublesome alternator and battery. These were typical problems with a used car, and they needed regular attention to avoid worse outcomes.

A chilly December morning, I ventured out to the cold road to begin my commute. Starting the engine and driving down the road felt like a victory. However, as I approached a stop light less than a block from my workplace, the truck tried to stall. This was not an uncommon issue, but it did happen early in the morning. To my relief, the intersection was clear, giving me a small window to work with.

Without hesitation, I put the truck out of gear, opened the door, and stepped outside to push. Being a petite woman, weighing 140 pounds at the time, I did not have much muscle to rely on. Luck was with me because the road had a slight dip after the light, which allowed the truck to free-roll, and with a jump inside, I managed to shift into first gear. With a determined "Vhrroom," the truck finally moved towards the parking lot, arriving just in time for work.

This incident, while regular for me, was a testament to the nature of cars that could be unreliable even with careful upkeep. I continued to push the limits of my little Nesson till one day it stopped definitively and refused to start. Replacing it with another Nesson was a dream, but the search was ongoing.

Modern-Day Incident: A Call to Awareness

Fast-forwarding to a recent instance, I can't recall the exact details of a car stuck in the middle lane due to a broken timing belt. After realizing the issue, I turned on my hazard flasher and called AAA for assistance. The wait for the tow truck was long, and it brought to light some of the worst and best of human nature on the road.

Some drivers were inobservant and oblivious to the disabled car, only noticing the flashing hazard lights or the sight of a car in the middle of traffic when it was too late. Some helpful drivers inquired whether they could offer assistance, understanding the situation. However, others were inconsiderate and aggressive, honking repeatedly or yelling in frustration. They seemed to believe I was intentionally blocking the way, an impossibility when your car has stalled.

The most jarring experience was one instance where I had to vacate the car and sit on the curb, watching a parade of angry honks, until the tow truck finally arrived. This encounter highlighted the range of reactions to a simple traffic issue, from indifference to blatant hostility. Police officers, like the one who helped me with a car with a failed automatic transmission, were often the unsung heroes during such times.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

In conclusion, these stories teach us a valuable lesson about car maintenance and driving awareness. Cars can fail unexpectedly, leaving us stranded, but it is our actions and reactions that truly matter. Whether it's a car in good condition or one on the brink of breaking down, awareness of the situation and consideration for others can make all the difference.

Car breakdowns can be frustrating, but they also serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility on the road. By preparing our vehicles for the inevitable and being empathetic to others in difficult situations, we can make our commutes safer and more pleasant for everyone.
