My Journey as a Nurse: A Heartfelt Calling and a Lifelong Mission

My journey as a nurse began in response to a heartfelt calling from my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Looking back, I realize that being a nurse was one of the greatest privileges I received in life. From my early days of training to the countless moments of joy and sorrow, this profession has been a significant part of my identity.

The most rewarding aspect of my career was seeing patients recover and thrive. There is nothing quite like witnessing a new life entering the world or being able to provide comfort and support to someone nearing the end of their journey. However, the profession also comes with its challenges, particularly the difficult moments of watching patients pass on.

As I reflect on my 35 years of nursing experience, I can honestly say that the majority of my life's value was realized during this time. From holding the hands of patients as they took their final breaths to nurturing new lives into the world, every moment was fraught with both joy and sorrow.

The many doctors and nurses who impacted my life have played a vital role in shaping my experiences and values. Even those who were not positive influences taught me invaluable lessons. Through my work, I learned about empathy, resilience, and the power of faith. I discovered that the nursing profession itself is among the most honorable, and that it can serve as a profound means of serving Jesus Christ.

When health issues forced me into retirement, the transition was particularly challenging. It has taken me a considerable amount of time to come to terms with not actively practicing. However, I remain deeply grateful for the countless friendships and experiences I gained through my career. I especially cherished those moments when I felt my work was a direct reflection of my faith.

It's also important to recognize the difference between someone who enters the nursing profession for status or financial gain and those who are called to serve. True nurses are motivated by a desire to care and heal, not by external rewards. This distinction highlights the true essence and value of the nursing profession.

My journey as a nurse continues to influence my perspectives on life and service. It has taught me that every moment counts, and that we should cherish the opportunities we have to care for others. Whether it's a brief encounter with a patient or a lifelong partnership with a family, each interaction is a chance to make a positive impact.

As I look ahead, I remain committed to sharing the lessons I've learned and supporting those who are entering the nursing profession. I continue to believe that every nurse has the potential to inspire and transform lives with their dedication and compassion.
