Military Lessons for a Better Life: Insights from a First Lieutenant
What Important Life Lessons Did You Learn from Being in the Military?
During my career in the military, I gained invaluable insights that have shaped my personal and professional life. Although the duties of a first lieutenant in the ROKA (Republic of Korea Army) with a focus on Military Intelligence are rigorous, the experience has been transformative. Here are some of the key lessons I've learned that transcend the military environment and can benefit anyone.
Survival Skills and Emergency Preparedness
The military training instills essential survival skills that can be applied to any situation in life. From learning how to construct a debris shelter for emergencies to performing emergency medical procedures, the skills are not only practical but also foster resilience. These lessons taught me the importance of adaptability and the ability to survive in challenging circumstances without losing hope.
Discussion and Collaboration
One of the most important lessons I learned in the military is the value of discussion and collaboration. During my training at the Military Intelligence School, I engaged in debates and discussions that are central to the educational process. This fosters a culture of open communication and constructive debate, which permeates into other aspects of life.
Nothing is Impossible
My role in the Special Military Branch has reinforced the idea that with dedication and hard work, anything is possible. Despite the physical demands and challenging duties, I realized that even the most daunting tasks can be accomplished by maintaining a positive mindset and perseverance. This mindset not only serves me well in the military but also in personal and professional life.
Self-Discovery and Personal Growth
The military environment also provided a unique opportunity for self-discovery. Away from the distractions of civilian life, I had the time to reflect on who I am and what I value. Engaging in physical activities like running, working out, and studying helped me identify my passions and strengths. This introspection has been crucial in shaping my identity and decision-making.
Transforming Your Job into a Calling
After graduation, I served in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and became a platoon commander. This experience taught me that treating your work as a mere job versus a calling can make a significant difference in job satisfaction. The principles that guided my career include:
Never Treat Your Job as Just Work
Many people see their jobs as just a means to an end, but there is always more to it. Consider your job as a calling, where your purpose is to serve and make a positive impact. For example, as an officer, I helped soldiers become better prepared and even stayed back during weekends to minister to their needs. These actions not only contributed to the military but also to my personal growth.
Look at the Doughnut and Not the Hole
When faced with difficulties, focus on the positive aspects of your job. With the help of our Creator, we can change our environment and turn challenges into opportunities. By understanding that companies can change, even the imperfect ones, you can find joy in your work.
Take Control of the Situation
Work to improve your capacity and make changes in your workplace. Whether you have authority or not, you can still contribute positively. Use informal communication to build relationships and influence the work environment. Adopt an employer mindset and think about how you can improve the company and work with your colleagues to build a great team.
Develop Win-Win Relationships
Your goal should be to create win-win situations that benefit everyone. This mindset will inspire you to make positive changes and lead to better job satisfaction. By choosing to have healthy working relationships and rejecting win-lose or lose-lose scenarios, you can contribute to a healthier work environment.
In the end, the lessons I learned in the military have helped me to find joy in my everyday life. By treating my job as a calling and focusing on positive aspects, I have been able to transform my working life and find greater satisfaction and meaning.
