Andrew Reimer, once hailed as a revolutionary force in Australian radio through his work at Heart 107.3 in Hobart, Tasmania, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled leadership and innovative media strategies. His journey from California to Tasmania with a background in the American media industry is a fascinating chapter in the rich tapestry of Australian broadcasting.
Background and Professional Journey
Originally from California, Andrew Reimer brought with him over three decades of experience in corporate leadership, divisional/operational management, and marketing. His early work in the American media industry equipped him with the skills and insights necessary to make significant impacts within the Australian market. He founded High Performance in 2002 in Hobart, Tasmania, establishing himself as a key player in the Australian media landscape.
In his role as State Manager for the Australian Institute of Management from 2009 to 2011, Reimer further enhanced his reputation as a passionate advocate for top-tier leadership management and business development strategies. His collaboration with the H.P. team on client projects demonstrates his commitment to guiding businesses toward success.
Founder of Magic 107 and Heart 107.3
One of Andrew Reimer's most significant contributions to the Australian media was the founding of Magic 107, which later rebranded to Heart 107.3 in the mid-1990s. He transformed unprofitable radio stations into thriving enterprises, achieving notoriety for his forward-thinking approach to broadcasting. His arrival at Triple T in the mid-1990s brought a breath of fresh air, particularly with the company's subsequent success under his leadership.
Personal Tributes
Tribute from Dave Noonan: Dave Noonan, a notable breakfast announcer at Heart 107.3, recollected an anecdote where Reimer through his experience and skills, took over a failing station and turned it into a success. He recalled, 'He was a break of fresh air when he arrived at Triple T in the mid-90s directly from the US where he had taken unprofitable radio stations and made them successful.'
Kim Napier's Reflections: Kim Napier, who was part of the team at Sea FM, Magic 107, and Heart 107.3, shared her personal insights. She remembered, 'Andrew Reimer was a great support to me. I was juggling breakfast news shifts with a baby and he allowed me to set up a porta-cot in the newsroom and bring Ollie along whenever I couldn’t find care. It was in 2000 Todd Campbell left the Todd and Dave Show. I had been interacting with the boys during the news and Andrew picked up on the chemistry between Dave and me and asked me to fill Todd’s role. At the time I had been offered the political reporter’s position with Southern Cross Television but decided to take the radio job instead as it was my son’s first year at school and a midday finish was perfect. Again Andrew offered whatever support was needed. Thanks to him The Kim and Dave Show was born and I had the best 15 years of fun.'
His Motivation and Work Ethic
Reimer was known for his incredible work ethic and motivational leading. Kim Napier recalls a time when she responded to Andrew with, 'Can’t wait for the weekend.' To which he responded, 'You know what I say to people who say that Get another job.' Napier stated, 'I’ve never said that to a boss since.' These anecdotes highlight his dedication and the respect he commanded from those around him.
