Life at 78: Reflections and Plans

I am 77 years old. Given my current health, barring any unforeseen medical changes, in the next 9 months I will continue doing what I am doing now. My plans and habits are unlikely to change significantly, but if my wife should pass away, a noticeable change in my schedule and activities would be expected. However, only those closely familiar with my daily life would notice such modifications.

The Joy of Composting

For the past 10 years, I have been engaged in the practice of composting. It is a hobby that brings me joy and a sense of fulfillment. By the time I reach 78, I am quite certain that I will have become merely a component of the rich garden soil. It's a beautiful way to give back to the earth and ensure sustainable living.

Preparing for the Future

With the recent election, I doubt I will be around for another 10 years. This thought brings both a sense of urgency and acceptance of the natural course of life. Life is fleeting, and each day becomes precious as we approach our twilight years.

A New Chapter Begins

Next month, I will turn 79. The way I spent my 78th birthday is the same way I spent my 77th, with the stability of a work schedule that provides me with 40 hours a week at a school and care for my feline companion. This routine brings me a sense of consistency and purpose that I cherish.

A Mission to Cambodia

Looking back, the most memorable time of my 78th year was when I was a missionary in Cambodia. Our son, Jonathan, visited my wife and me in Rayong, Thailand, to encourage us to retire in Canada. This meeting was a turning point in our lives. After 52 years of service in Asia, we realized the need to find an independent living arrangement in Calgary where we could benefit from accessible medical care.

Reflections on Aging

I am 83 now, and the prospect of living for an additional 78 years is manageable if I can maintain my mental faculties and sharpness. However, I hold no illusions that longevity at such an advanced age is certain. The possibility of a lengthy decline is a sobering thought.

Looking Forward to the Future

On a whimsical note, I would love to celebrate my 160th birthday. If I were to live that long, 2066 would mark the millennium anniversary of the Norman Invasion of Britain. The idea of spending the year in Britain, immersed in the history and culture surrounding this significant event, would be an incredible experience. It would certainly make the prospect of aging more exciting and intriguing.

Conclusion

As we approach our golden years, it is important to reflect on our past, plan for the future, and enjoy the present. Life at 78, or any age really, is a unique journey that presents its own set of challenges and joys. Whether you're looking to continue working, pursue hobbies, or simply enjoy the company of loved ones, the key is to find what brings you happiness and fulfillment in this final chapter of your life.
