Kindness and Confidence: A Tutor’s Reflection

Introduction:

Every day brings new lessons, not just in the classroom but also in life. This essay recounts a moment that significantly impacted a teenage tutor's life, emphasizing the profound significance of kindness and confidence.

A Journey from Skepticism to Strength

Life as a teenager can be challenging, especially when you're dealing with physical insecurity and daily struggles. I remember my early teens vividly, a period when my body was still growing, and my confidence was low due to my slim build. The lack of physical muscle made me feel out of place among peers and even in routine life.

After completing my 12th boards, I started tutoring children from the local area as an escape from my everyday troubles. It was a therapeutic experience, a chance to connect with children and engage in lively discussions about everything from fashion to personal habits. Children, being naturally expressive, would often have intense debates about trivial matters, but it was these moments that kept me grounded and happy.

A Moment of Kindness

One day, the children were debating about a particular student who wore an outfit that didn’t suit her during a school function. The discussion was heated, and the children seemed fixated on the dress instead of focusing on the respectful and meaningful aspects of the event. That’s when I gently intervened, asking them what they thought about the girl’s outfit, and they pointed out that the dress was a bit too much for the occasion and didn’t fit her well.

As the children continued their debate, one child, who had been quiet until then, spoke up: “Aap to vaise hi sundar ho kuch v pahan lo acche hi lgoge.” Translated, it means, “You would look good in whatever you wear, as you are already handsome.”

This simple and kind word left me speechless. I didn’t have a witty comeback; all I could do was smile gently. This act of kindness from a child, who I presume did not have any ulterior motives, made a lasting impact on my confidence and body image.

The Result: Growth and Appreciation

Since that moment, I have indeed gained some muscle and height. However, the real value of that moment wasn’t physical. It was the recognition of inner beauty and the realization that confidence isn’t about appearance but about self-esteem and self-worth.

Over the years, I have received many compliments, but the one from the children stood out. It reminded me that true beauty and confidence come from within and not from external validation.

Future Reflections

Now, going into my next book, “Going Nowhere and Other Wondrous Things We Mistake as Pointless,” I am revisiting these early experiences. The book is set to release in early December 2024, and I am sharing the cover design created by the illustrious Dan Roam. The cover, along with the back cover, reflects the journey from a place of doubt to a newfound understanding of one's self-worth.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest act of kindness can lead to significant personal growth. As I put pen to paper, I am reflecting on these moments of kindness and the profound impact they had on my life.
