How to Spot a Consultant at an Airport: Beyond the Stereotypes

Spotting a consultant at an airport can be a playful challenge, as many travelers might fit that profile. However, there are certain characteristics and behaviors that can help identify them. It's important to note that these traits are not foolproof, and many travelers can exhibit similar behaviors.

Common Characteristics and Behaviors of Consultants

Business Attire: Consultants typically dress in professional clothing such as tailored suits, blazers, or smart dresses when traveling. They maintain a polished look even during business trips. This is because they need to look professional and prepared at all times.

Technology: Look for individuals using laptops, tablets, or smartphones. They often spend time working on these devices, reviewing documents, or taking business calls. Consultants are often connected and always ready for a project or a meeting.

Travel Accessories: Consultants carry high-quality briefcases or rolling bags that are designed for business travel. Noise-canceling headphones are also common, as they help them focus and multitask efficiently.

Traveling Alone: Many consultants travel solo, especially if they are on short business trips. This allows them to manage their time effectively and focus on their meetings and tasks.

Documentation: They may have printed itineraries, business cards, or proposals with them, suggesting they are on a work-related trip. Consultants often bring these materials to keep track of their assignments and plans.

A Personal Perspective on Being a Consultant

As a consultant with over 20 years of experience and having worked in 45 countries, I can confidently say that I don't always fit the typical consultant stereotype. Here are some of my personal habits and preferences when traveling:

Casual Clothing: I always dress in casual clothes and usually wear very comfortable shoes. Ties are something I hate, so I never wear suits and ties. I prefer to be comfortable and easily accessible, which is why I often dress casually.

Punctuality: I always arrive at the airport in plenty of time, especially for international flights where the airport processes can be very inefficient. Rushing is not my style, and I prefer to be in control of my time.

Light Travel: I travel as light as possible. This could mean a carry-on or a small checked piece, depending on the length and nature of the stay. I prioritize having my hands free, which is why I often use a stylish backpack.

Work on the Plane: Yes, I often work on the plane. I like to take advantage of the flight to stay productive and make progress on my projects. Business class is usually my option, as I find it more comfortable for long flights.

Eating and Drinking: I hardly ever eat plane food or drink alcohol. I prefer to have my own meals and snacks and enjoy the company of my co-workers or colleagues during the flight.

Security Lines: Traveling with an international passport, I don't have access to TSA Pre-check, so I often have to wait in regular security lines. This is a minor inconvenience, but I prefer to be prepared and travel smarter.

You are unlikely to spot me as a consultant in an airport because I try to retain my personal and professional life, even when on the road.
