How to Begin Your CDS Exam Preparation from the First Year of
The Combined Defense Services (CDS) examination is a crucial step for Engineering graduates aspiring to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. While the CDS examination can be taken in the final year of graduation or after obtaining a bachelor's degree, it's never too early to start preparing. For students in their programs, beginning the CDS preparation journey early can be a strategic advantage.
Finding the Right CDS Notification
Follow these steps to understand the exam eligibility criteria:
Visit the official Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) website and search for the latest CDS notifications.
Download the relevant CDS 2 notification from any recent year to find detailed information about eligibility and important dates.
Avoid confusion by downloading the CDS 1 notification as the answers may not align accurately with CDS 2 requirements.
Step-by-Step Guide to Start Your CDS Preparation
1. Understand the CDS Exam Pattern
The CDS exam is conducted twice a year to select candidates for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. It consists of two stages:
Written Exam: CDS I includes three papers: English, Elementary Mathematics, and General Knowledge. CDS II includes only two papers: English and General Knowledge. Both exams consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs). A negative marking of 1/3rd is applicable for each wrong answer.
Interview: Candidates who clear the written exam will proceed to the interview stage, which includes the Personality Test and Intelligence and Personality Test (IPAT).
2. Gather Study Material
Collect the necessary study materials such as CDS exam books, previous year question papers, and online resources like the Embibe Application. These resources will help you understand the exam pattern and strengthen your preparation.
3. Create a Study Plan
Create a well-structured study plan that covers all subjects and topics. Allocate sufficient time to each subject based on your strengths and weaknesses. Include time for revision and practice on the Embibe App to maintain consistent progress.
4. Focus on Basics
Start your preparation by strengthening your core fundamentals in English, mathematics, and general knowledge.
For English, work on improving your grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
For Elementary Mathematics, practice solving a variety of mathematical problems to build a strong foundation.
For General Knowledge, stay updated with current affairs, history, geography, and political developments relevant to the defense services.
5. Solve Previous Years Papers
PRACTICE is key to success in the CDS exam. Solve previous year's CDS question papers to understand the exam pattern and gain confidence in your preparation.
Practice each section diligently to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
Analyze your mistakes and work on improving weak areas.
Regular practice will help you build speed and accuracy, which are crucial for the exam.
Good luck as you embark on your journey to becoming a part of the Indian Armed Forces.
