How to Apply for a US Visa from India: A Comprehensive Guide

Determine the Type of Visa You Need

Step 1: Complete the DS-160 Form

The DS-160 is an online application form that requires you to provide personal details, information about your purpose of visit, and other basic information. Ensure that you double-check everything for accuracy. I almost forgot to save a copy of the confirmation page, so make sure to save it. You’ll need it for the interview.

Step 2: Pay the Visa Application Fee

After submitting the DS-160 form, you need to pay the visa application fee. For a B1/B2 visa, the fee is approximately $160. You can pay this fee online through NEFT or at designated banks. Keep the payment receipt safe as you’ll need it for further steps.

Step 3: Schedule Your Appointments

Next, you’ll need to schedule two important appointments:

Visa Application Center (VAC): At this center, they will take your photo and fingerprints. Consular Interview: This is where you’ll meet with a visa officer who will decide if you get the visa.

Pro tip: During my interview, the officer asked why I wanted to visit the US. I kept my answer simple and honest, such as 'I want to attend a business conference to network and explore opportunities.'

Step 4: Prepare for the Interview

Make sure you have all the necessary documents ready. Here is a list of what I took with me:

They might not ask for all of these documents, but being over-prepared is always a good idea.
