How Changing Views Affect Our Perception of Institutions: A Personal Reflection

I must admit that I tend to forget most opinions that I abandon unless someone brings up the topic specifically. I know there are times I have changed my opinion but can’t remember what it was about.

As I reflect on my life and the roles I've played professionally and personally, it is clear that viewpoints are not as static as one might initially assume. In my capacity as a social worker and my decades of living, I have seen very few instances where people dramatically shift their opinions on fundamental aspects of life such as politics, religion, sports, food choices, or even the type of friends they prefer. Rather, I have observed more subtle changes.

Subtle Changes in Viewpoints

Take, for instance, how people approach their educational institutions. There are times when my perspective on the Department of Education and our educational system has evolved in a way that is much more profound than I might have anticipated at the time. One such shift in my own opinion came recently. I now find myself vehemently opposed to the Department of Education and our current educational system, a position that is worlds apart from my admiration and respect for them in the past. The phrase "never again" rings loud and clear in my mind when I think about that particular institution.

The Dynamics of Changing Views

Why do these shifts in opinion happen? The answer lies in a complex interplay of personal experiences, societal changes, and differing worldviews. While personality certainly plays a role in shaping our openness to change, it is not the only factor. External factors such as new information, life experiences, and social influences can all contribute to a shift in our views.

For instance, in my experience, individuals who are extroverted and adventurous are more likely to adopt new viewpoints due to their openness to new experiences and ideas. They are more willing to explore different perspectives and are less resistant to changes in their beliefs. On the other hand, those who are shy and introverted tend to hold onto their existing views more tightly, as these views provide a sense of security and stability in their lives.

Political Shifts and Their Impact

Let's look at another area where my views have changed over time: politics. In the past, I believed that the primary distinction between Democrats and Republicans was simply how they financed their agendas. Republicans focused on ensuring that the money spent was smart and sustainable, whereas Democrats tended to have a more immediate focus, leading to larger “pork” in their bills. However, the financial responsibility that came with this “pork” was often not a significant concern for Democrats.

As my own views on the Department of Education shifted, I began to see these same principles at play in the broader political arena. The shift has made me question the sustainability and long-term impact of certain policies and the willingness of various political parties to be fiscally responsible.

These changes in perspective are not easy to articulate, especially when they are as significant as a complete shift in one's opinion about a revered institution like the Department of Education. But they are indicative of the complex and evolving nature of our views and the impact that a range of factors, from personal experiences to broader social changes, can have on our thinking.

Reflecting on these shifts, I have come to appreciate the influence of personal and external factors on our viewpoints. While it is easy to dismiss the idea of change, especially in matters as significant as one's view of an institution, the reality is that such changes are not uncommon and often highlight the adaptability and fluidity of our beliefs and opinions.

In conclusion, while dramatic shifts in viewpoints may not be the norm, the subtle changes that do occur can be significant and impactful. Our views are constantly evolving, influenced by a myriad of factors, and it is important to be open to these changes as they occur, even when they lead to a shift from admiration to opposition, as is the case with my views on the Department of Education.
