Understanding the GST Registration Process

The Goods and Services Tax is a single, comprehensive indirect tax levied on goods and services across the value chain in India. Proper registration ensures compliance and facilitates easier tax returns, refund claims, and more. Here are the step-by-step instructions to follow to register for GST online.

Step 1: Accessing the GST Portal

To start the registration process, users need to visit the GST Portal. Once there, go to the 'Services' section and click on 'New Registration'. This will lead you to the appropriate form where you can enter your details.

Step 2: Providing Application Details

In the 'New Registration' page, the following information needs to be filled out:

Taxpayer Type State of Residence Legal Name of the Business Entity PAN Number Email Address of the Signatory

After completing the form, click on the 'Proceed' button.

Step 3: Generating the Temporary Reference Number (TRN)

Once the form is submitted, an OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to the registered mobile number. Upon entering the OTP, a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) will be generated. This TRN will be used to proceed with the application.

Step 4: Submitting Application Details Using TRN

Login using the TRN received and fill in the additional information such as:

Trade Name of the Business Constitution of the Business district Commissionerate Code, Division Code, and Range code Date of Commencement of Business Date when GST became necessary

Step 5: Filling the Promoters and Directors’ Information

The information required for promoters and directors includes:

Name Date of Birth Address Gender Email Address Designation DIN (Director Identification Number) Citizenship PAN (Permanent Account Number) and Aadhaar

Step 6: Submitting Information about Authorized Signatory

Details of the authorized signatory, nominated by the promoter of the company, need to be submitted. This includes:

Personal details similar to the above

Step 7: Entering Business Location and Upload Ownership Documents

Enter the principal place of business along with the following contact details:

Email Address Telephone Number Fax Number Ownership Documents such as Electricity Bills, Water Bills, and Rental Agreements

For additional places of business, enter the details accordingly.

Step 8: Providing Goods and Services Details

Enter the details of the goods and services supplied, including:

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) Code SAC (Special Additional Code) Code

Step 9: Submitting Bank Account Details

Provide the details of all the bank accounts you hold.

Step 10: Digital Signature Verification

Digitally sign the application using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or E-Signature after verifying the contents of the application.

Step 11: Obtaining the Application Reference Number (ARN)

After completing the application, an Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated. This number will be sent to your mobile number and email address. It will help track the application status later on.
