Forensic Investigations: Underestimated or Underrated?

When I began my career in law enforcement, the field of forensic investigations was far from being the glamorous pursuit that it is today. In my early days, the topic intrigued me much less than I expected. It wasn't until later, when the portrayal of forensic investigators on TV shows like Quincy, and the success of series like Criminal Minds and Bones, that the public's interest in forensic science began to blossom. Dr. Quincy, with his sailboat, Medical Examiner wagon, and knack for solving cases, captured the imagination of a generation. But as fascinating as these portrayals are, they often fail to convey the true nature and demands of forensic investigations.

Now, thanks to advancements in technology and a greater understanding of the scientific methods employed, the field is more dynamic than ever. Each forensic professional, from the humble dispatcher to the seasoned field agent, plays a vital role in the investigative process. The work is a collaborative effort, where each individual's expertise contributes to solving complex cases. The excitement of forensic investigations lies not just in the cutting-edge techniques but in the uniqueness of each case. No two cases are the same, which keeps the work challenging, engaging, and rewarding.

The field of forensic investigation faces challenges that are no less significant than those in any other realm of law enforcement. The turnaround rate can be high, in part due to the emotionally draining nature of the work. Many investigators, like myself, have turned to alcohol or drugs as a means to cope with the weight of what they see and witness. It is not just the physical toll but the psychological toll that often merits close attention, especially in cases involving mass killings at stores, schools, buses, planes, or factories. Mental health experts, alongside first responders, play a crucial part in providing support to the families and victims, but the last responders, the forensic investigators, are often overlooked.

Furthermore, it is a misconception that the glamorous work of forensic investigators is straightforward. What we see, smell, and touch is far removed from what the public is able to witness. It can take years of training and experience before investigators are trusted to handle cases without extra support. The work is not just technical but also deeply personal, aimed at helping families during their most difficult times. My philosophy is simple: to assist families and provide closure during the worst moments of their lives.

I choose to maintain a clear path without the need for substances like alcohol or drugs myself. Occasionally, I do struggle with sleep issues, but that is a small price to pay for the work I do. I have been through multiple marriages, yet I hold no regrets about my career choice. In fact, I would do it all again, even if I had to go through three of those marriages again. My wife, Mimi Goldman, shares my passion for forensic investigations and has written a memoir titled Memoirs of a Trauma Junkie, offering a firsthand account of what it means to be a forensic investigator.

"Memoirs of a Trauma Junkie" provides a unique lens into the lives of forensic investigators, detailing the personal and professional journeys of both myself and my wife. It’s a story that will make you laugh, cry, gasp, and perhaps even question some of the Hollywood narratives surrounding the field of forensic science.

Forensic investigations, while certainly intense and sometimes portrayed overly glorified, are filled with complex challenges, strong human bonds, and an unrelenting drive to seek the truth. It is more than a glamorous career; it is a calling that few can comprehend fully, but one that impacts countless lives in profound ways.
