Evolution of Career Aspirations: From Childhood Dreams to Reality

To be very honest… I’ve always wanted to study medicine as a child and specialize in pediatrics, and I’m so thankful that I’m actually pursuing my dream. I’m about to enter my second year, and I’m so excited. But… I’ve always dreamed of schooling outside my country and working my way towards being a model and a doctor. Unfortunately, these things haven’t worked out, but I’m still grateful and hopeful that someday… I’ll be able to study abroad and also become an editorial model or something. Sounds unrealistic but I believe nothing is impossible.

On another note, I’ve always dreamt of marrying or dating an athlete because there are so attractive to me, especially basketballers. But right now, I’m 17 and I’ve never had a boyfriend… I get made fun of for it, but as I said, I’m still very hopeful that my dream basketball player is coming to get me.

Changing Career Goals from Childhood

I think my career goals changed every year as a child. I went from wanting to be a scientist to a musician to an artist, photographer, poet, novelist or writer. All kinds of things! Finally by high school, I had decided to become a veterinarian due to my love of animals, but biology class was a huge eye-opener. We had to dissect things, and that was a wake-up call. I quickly realized that I would never become a veterinarian. I ran down to see my guidance counselor very upset that I didn’t know what I wanted to be for the rest of my life. The counselor talked about my hobbies and what I liked in school and suggested that I would be good at occupational therapy. It sounded great to me. That was my dream until my senior year in high school.

One of my study hall teachers talked me into deciding to become a teacher. Very shocking since I was too shy to even answer questions in class. Despite that, it turned out to be the perfect career choice for me. I LOVED teaching! Even hated vacations for the first ten years because I missed the kids so much. Once I had my own children, I saw vacations in a different light. I loved it so much that even though I am officially retired, I continue to teach in the after-school program of my old school. And I volunteer there quite often as well. When I first retired to take care of my mother who had dementia, I wondered what I was going to be for the rest of my life. That got answered when I was asked to teach in after-school programs. I also do quite a bit of tutoring and teach quilting classes to adults as well. Guess I was born to be a teacher.

Reflections on Journey

The journey from childhood dreams to reality is not always smooth. It took me many years and numerous career shifts to find my true calling. There were moments of doubt and fear, but the love and passion I had for these various fields never wavered. The lesson is that it's okay to change your mind and explore different paths before finding the right fit.

Key Lessons

Stay True to What You Love: Whether it's medicine or teaching, always stay true to what you love. True passion can often be a powerful motivator. Embrace Change: Don't be afraid to change your career goals. Life is dynamic, and what you want today might not be the same in a few years. Seek Guidance: Guidance counselors, teachers, and mentors can provide valuable insights and help steer you in the right direction. Follow Your Passions: Whether it's music, teaching, or something else, follow your passions. It will make the path less challenging and more fulfilling. Volunteer and Tutor: These can be great ways to share your knowledge and passion with others, even after retirement.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the evolution of my career aspirations from childhood dreams to my present reality is a journey filled with ups and downs. While some dreams haven't materialized, I have found my calling in teaching. It's important to be flexible and open to new opportunities, as they can often lead to fulfilling careers. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or a professional in any field, remember that your journey is unique and special, and it's okay to pursue your dreams wholeheartedly.
