Embracing a Break from Perfectionism: Navigating the Journey to Mental Well-being
Redefining Success: Lessons from My Younger Self
Is it just me, or has everybody else also experienced the feeling of endlessly striving to be a high achiever? For me, these days, I can definitively say that I’ve come to terms with needing a break from perfectionism. As a child, the expectations were set high; in primary school, just like many, I worked diligently to meet the standards and expectations, especially in academics. Despite being on top in most subjects, it was a different story when it came to mathematics. While my peers excelled in numbers, I didn't; it was as if people were placing a disproportionate emphasis on mathematical prowess, implying that it somehow overshadowed all the other aspects of my performance.
Back then, I set myself up for a constant struggle. The societal pressure to excel in mathematics affected not only my confidence but also my grades. But as I grew older, I began to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to success. It was a pivotal moment when I realized that my strengths lay not just in numbers but in other areas—areas that I might not have explored fully.
A Life Turned Upside Down: Resignation and Retiring Early
Recent events have further solidified my perspective on the importance of balance in life. At the age of 44, I decided to resign from my job rather than continue to push against the expectations set by my large ego. The financial burden of maintaining a large ego was overwhelming, and I simply couldn't sustain it anymore. Instead, I chose to retire early, a decision that has had a profound impact on my life and mental state.
This decision marked a significant shift in my approach to work and life. After all, the struggle to maintain a massive ego had started to take a toll on both my mental and financial well-being. It wasn't until I cut my ties with the large ego that I truly felt free. Today, I focus on feeding a much smaller ego, ensuring that it is well-maintained without overindulgence. This smaller ego is the key to my current state of happiness and stability.
The Power of Routine and Discipline
Adopting a strict routine has become crucial to my journey to mental well-being. It ensures that my new smaller ego stays content and balanced. Routine provides the structure and discipline needed to navigate the challenges life presents. While my larger ego, the one that's smarter and more creative, might sometimes try to assert itself, the smaller, more disciplined ego keeps it in check. This balance is essential to my current state of peace and contentment.
To manage my new lifestyle, I’ve had to adjust my habits and adapt to a more rigid schedule. This involves setting specific times for work, relaxation, and personal activities. It might seem difficult at times, but the benefits of a disciplined routine are undeniable. The strict routine not only helps in managing stress but also allows me to focus on the things that truly matter in life.
Conclusion: The Path to True Fulfillment
Life is about more than just achieving an image of success. It's about finding what truly fulfills us and staying true to that inner voice. For me, that means taking care of my mental well-being and embracing a new way of living. Whether it's through routine and discipline or simply taking a break, the path to happiness and true fulfillment lies in discovering what brings us joy and meaning in life.
Everyone can relate to the stress of constantly trying to be a high achiever. In the end, it's important to listen to your inner self and prioritize mental well-being over external validation. Embracing a break from perfectionism and focusing on what truly matters can lead to a more fulfilling and happier life.
