Choosing Psychology: My Journey and Choices
Why Did I Choose Psychology?
Like many college freshmen fresh out of high school, I was eager to understand myself better by studying psychology. The question of how the human mind works captivated me from the very beginning. My journey in academia started with a major in psychology, focusing on the individual, and a minor in sociology, delving into the study of society. These fields complement each other, forming a microcosm and a macrocosm, respectively. As the years passed, I added social work to my academic plan, which included practical internships to apply the theories I had learned.
My passion for helping people led me to explore further. In my senior year, I was one course shy of achieving a double-major in psychology and social work. However, my ego and the desire for two diplomas in my office weighed heavily on me. After considering all the options, I decided to pursue my graduate studies and obtain an M.S.W. degree in one year. Attending East Carolina University's Graduate School of Social Work in Greenville, North Carolina seemed like the perfect choice for me.
The Influence of 'Sybil'
One significant influence in my decision to study psychology came from the movie 'Sybil,' which I watched at the age of 11. This film planted a seed in my mind, making me curious about the human psyche and the stories it could uncover.
From High School to College
After my high school years, a spiritual experience that I had at 17 altered the course of my life. This experience motivated me to complete high school and attend Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, USA. It was the beginning of yet another exciting chapter in my journey.
Psychology and Hypnosis
In my studies, I delved into the fascinating world of hypnosis. Hypnosis has always been a topic of interest for me, as it offers insights into the workings of the human mind and the power of suggestion. Exploring hypnosis has been an enriching part of my academic journey.
Conclusion
My decision to major in psychology and pursue a career in social work stems from a deep desire to understand the human mind and help others. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience in social work has prepared me to fulfill my ultimate goal of running my own clinical private practice as a therapist.
