Why is it so Difficult to Find a Suitable Partner Through Arranged Marriages in India Today?

Arranged marriages continue to be a significant part of Indian cultural heritage, but the modern era has brought about several challenges that make the process more difficult than it once was.

Changing Demands from Indian Girls

Modern Indian girls are setting high standards for themselves and their potential partners. Gone are the days when marrying into an extended family was sufficient. Today, there are a myriad of expectations that must be met for a marriage to be considered acceptable.

Living Arrangements

One of the most critical requirements for a girl in modern arranged marriages is the expectation that a separate living arrangement will be provided for the couple. This means that the boy must have already selected a place for the couple to live independently from in-laws. This is a newly added criterion in today's society.

Economic Stability

Candidates must prove their earning potential. Girls today are demanding men from metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, who are gainfully employed. Furthermore, in the event of a divorce, there should be an equal division of assets.

Financial Management and Living Expenses

Financial solvency and proper management of household expenses are other important factors. Setting up funds for annual activities such as travel and ensuring both partners contribute to them is now expected. Additionally, a monthly budget should be established, and both husband and wife should contribute towards rent/mortgage, monthly bills, children's school fees, groceries, and savings for tuition fees and marriage expenses.

Pushing for Economic Equality

One of the most significant changes is the pressure on men to provide a stable income equivalent to the top 10 earning positions in the country. Such high-income earners often have a steady stream of marriage proposals, primarily from women eager to find financial security.

Role Expectations in Arranged Marriages

Arranged marriages come with a unique set of expectations. The wife (daughter-in-law) is expected to care for the family, while the husband (son-in-law) should take care of his wife. These roles often have high expectations, and failure to meet them can lead to dissatisfaction and conflict.

Privacy and Independence

Privacy and independence, which were once considered essential, are often seen as non-negotiable in modern marriages. Couples are expected to live with their in-laws, and staying away can be seen as a crime. However, despite these traditional expectations, arranged marriages are facing their own set of challenges. Even though divorce rates are higher in love marriages because couples are free to make their own decisions, arranged marriages are more durable, lasting until death, while love marriages may only last until there are no more tears.

While arranged marriages remain a cornerstone of Indian tradition, the changing landscape of society is challenging these age-old practices. It is essential for both families and young couples to navigate these complexities and find balance in these marriages to ensure long-term success.
