Can an Average Student Crack the CAT? Insights and Success Stories
Imagine a scenario where a student scores a remarkable 99.96 percentile in the CAT, yet considers themselves an average performer. This is precisely the case of a student who achieved an extraordinary feat, demonstrating that success in the CAT (Common Admission Test) is not solely reserved for top-notch students or geniuses. This article delves into the journey and mindset of a student who, despite not being at the top of the class, managed to secure impressive scores in major CAT and XAT exams, providing insights and inspiration for those who may feel like they are out of the top tier.
The Unassuming Journey
My journey with the CAT began in 2020, when, despite being well-prepared, I became complacent after an early job offer came in September. A day before the exam, I fell ill, affecting my performance, yet I still managed to score a respectable 97.54. Following this, I received an offer from Indore and decided to attempt the exam again with renewed vigor.
The year 2021 was different: working from home with a job I enjoyed, I wrote the exam without much preparation, aiming for a 99th percentile. The results surprised me with a 99.31 percentile, but I missed the Lucknow shortlist by a narrow margin. This near-miss did not dissuade me; instead, it fueled my determination to give it another shot.
The Unwavering Commitment
In 2022, I faced an even greater challenge. With the reopening of physical offices and a relocation to Pune, my preparation schedule became more demanding. However, I committed to dedicating 3-4 hours of intense preparation every day, irrespective of the time or commute. I signed up for test series from three different providers and completed around 60 mocks, consistently analyzing each mock to identify and address weaknesses.
The exam itself was challenging, with a difficult VARC paper and a demanding DILR section. However, QA provided some much-needed relief. Despite the tough paper, I remained calm and satisfied with my efforts. On December 21, 2022, while at a science fair, I received the news that had been anticipated: a 99.96 percentile score.
The Key to Success: Unsurpassed Zeal and Discipline
What sets me apart from those who missed the top percentile? It's the unwavering zeal to not give up and the persistence to work hard and stay disciplined. These attributes are common among many successful CAT aspirants. The journey to becoming extraordinary in some parameters, rather than being top of the class, can still lead to remarkable achievements.
If you feel like you are not a top performer, take heart! The success of an average student like me demonstrates that dedicated effort can lead to outstanding results. Focus on excelling in certain areas and you will surely achieve your goals!
