Believers and Atheists: Questioning Our Own and Others Beliefs

Why Do Believers Keep Questioning the Rationale of Atheists While Ignoring the Lack of Rationale of Their Own Beliefs?

For Duty and Humanity!

Blessings.

Non-atheists question atheistic beliefs as a public service. It's the dirty job where someone has to do it.

The atheist belief system is not exempt from questioning—only from questioning by atheists. The perceived prohibition against atheists questioning the atheist belief system does not apply to non-atheists.

Atheist beliefs are questionable. To question atheist beliefs is quite simply a duty incumbent on every normally intelligent living adult human being.

The Absence of Thought and Religious Duty

Some atheists may experience an absence of thought with regard to God, similar to an infant or a mouse. Non-theists cannot be faulted for this absence of thought. Theists, however, can be since intelligent thought is central to all great religions.

Understanding Atheism beyond Definition

A description of atheism brings out details of belief that a mere definition of atheism does not capture. Atheism, defined as nothing more than a lack of recognition of the primal reality that all great religions attest to, tells us nothing about the various beliefs that atheists commonly hold.

Questioning the Existence of God

The belief that God does not exist is questionable and has been successfully questioned many times. Few, such as Anthony Flew, Michael Martin, Kai Nielsen, and Quentin Smith, attempt to defend it.

The Blind Belief in the Absence of Evidence

The most peculiar of atheist beliefs is the belief that there is no atheist belief system. But more fundamental than this mistake is the blindly held belief that there is no evidence for the existence of God. If this belief fails, even an absence of belief becomes questionable. There is a reason for questioning this absence of evidence.

The Continuous Fascination: Believers and Atheists

Why would believers and atheists question the rationale of each other while ignoring the lack of rationale in their own beliefs? Theists and some atheists are fascinated that others think differently from them. That is fair enough. The weird thing is not this, but rather that theists constantly seem to think themselves as a collective group 'theists' on one side of a fence and atheists on the other. In reality, with over 2000 different gods and a history of killing each other over different beliefs, theists have bigger and more violent issues with their fellow theists than they ever had with atheists or vice versa.

Conclusion

Both believers and atheists must question their own beliefs rigorously. It is a duty for every intelligent human to critically evaluate and examine their beliefs. The history and practice of religions show us the importance of questioning and intellectual integrity. It is essential to have open debates and discussions to foster a better understanding of different belief systems and to promote a society that respects and accommodates diverse beliefs.
