Experience of Education Abroad: A Personal Narration

My journey as an educator and parent began more than four decades ago when my family relocated to Taipei, Taiwan, in 1980. My two daughters, aged 11 and 15, attended Taipei American School a fee-paying private institution with a diverse student body.

International School Experiences

The school was quite remarkable due to its student body composed of 37 different nationalities. All students were the children of expatriates, providing a unique environment where my daughters could interact with individuals from myriad cultural and social backgrounds. The school environment was exceptionally conducive to broadening their perspectives and understanding of other cultures. Furthermore, the school had a favorable student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1, which allowed for personalized attention and interaction between students and educators.

Professional Insights: Educational Systems in India and Germany

My professional journey continued as I became a college lecturer in India and Germany. During this tenure, I had the opportunity to observe and compare educational systems in both countries. My experience in these regions gave me a unique perspective on the differences in educational philosophies and practices.

India: In India, the emphasis was heavily on technical knowledge and practical skills. While this is commendable, there was a notable lack of focus on creativity and design, which are essential components of a well-rounded education. Art books were surprisingly kept away from students, locked away in storage cabinets. This restrictive approach left me questioning the broad educational impact of the curriculum on a student’s overall development.

Germany: Comparatively, the German educational system had a different set of challenges. The education system there was more rigid and less interactive. Interaction and collaboration between students were not as encouraged as they were in Taipei American School. The regime was, in my opinion, more oppressive, focusing more on strict adherence to curricular guidelines and less on fostering a collaborative and open-minded classroom environment.

Conclusion: An Ideal Setup

Reflecting on these experiences, the setup I encountered in Taipei American School stands out as exemplary. It provided an environment rich in diversity, enabling my daughters to develop a broad understanding of the world outside their immediate social circles. The small class sizes and supportive atmosphere facilitated a more engaging and effective learning experience.

In conclusion, my experiences with education abroad highlight the transformative role that well-designed educational institutions play in shaping students' perspectives and skills. Whether it's the multicultural environment of Taipei American School or the rigid structure of German schools, the key to a successful educational experience lies in balancing rigid standards with a nurturing and interactive learning environment.
