Adhering to Military Appearance Standards: Can You Enter SSB with Long Hair?
In the context of Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews for candidates seeking to join the Indian armed forces, an impressive appearance is key. While there is no explicit rule prohibiting long hair, candidates—particularly males—are advised to keep their hair neatly trimmed and styled in a manner that aligns with military standards. For female candidates, maintaining a clean and professional look is equally as important. Ultimately, the key is to present oneself in a disciplined and professional manner, which is highly valued within the armed forces.
Military standards emphasize neatness, professionalism, and discipline. Long hair, if left untrimmed, can give a very negative impression, as one interviewee humorously suggested:
You can, but it leaves a very very bad impression which I think any of us should give.
Arent I right bhai?
Female candidates with long hair are typically advised to tie it back. Male candidates may explore shorter styles that conform to military standards. However, fashion statements like heavy gold chains, multiple rings, or even leg rings are not in line with military norms and may detract from a disciplined appearance:
Yeah, can go with long hair, cooling glass heavy gold chain 10 fingers10 rings and if you are still not satisfied then you can wear rings for your legs also. What sort of question is this!!
Have you ever seen the haircut of an IMA/OTA gentlemen cadet?
It is true that a boy becomes a man after training, but at least have some minimum decency of neat haircut and formal clothes for your SSB. I have seen with light beard getting recommended, but that doesn't mean you must have a no-shave-November beard. Please maintain the decorum of the SSB.
I hope you formally comb your hairs even if it is pretty long. But please do not make weird hairstyles.
To this, an interviewer provided a poignant example. In college, a student came into class by saying "Sir, can I come in." The instructor replied that if the student wanted to enter, they should simply do so; if they were seeking permission, they should say "Sir, may I come in." This analogy underscores the importance of proper etiquette and appearance in a rigorous and formal setting like the SSB:
In light of this, the advice is to avoid long, unkempt hair and over-the-top accessories. Go for a reasonably short, smart haircut. Col Pradeep Walia, of the Defence Aspirant Academy in Jalandhar, reinforces this advice:
“Go with reasonably short and smart haircut.”
By adhering to these standards, candidates not only demonstrate discipline and professionalism but also show their genuine interest in joining the armed forces, which is highly valued.
Following these guidelines will ensure a more successful performance in the SSB interview process.
