A Life of Teaching: Lessons Learned and Shared
Introduction
Have you ever taught someone something? If so, the sense of accomplishment and the gratitude you receive can be incredibly rewarding. In this article, I will share my journey of teaching—from coaching my nephew in ping pong, training new hires at work, and teaching English to a migrant Dutch boy—through to becoming a teacher and eventually a father. The most valuable lesson I have imparted is the importance of believing in oneself.
Teaching Pool and Ping Pong
Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge and skills; it's about passing on enjoyment and confidence. For instance, I taught my friend how to play pool, and I was complimented by a fellow pool enthusiast. It was a satisfying moment to see someone appreciate the game I love. I also tried to teach my nephew how to keep score in ping pong, but that session was less successful. His father, however, was thankful for my efforts.
Community Responsibility
Teaching extends beyond acquiring skills. Sometimes, it involves showing care and responsibility towards the community. For example, whenever I see an elderly person standing on a bus or train, I urge passengers to offer their seat, a simple act that can make a big difference. I remember my neighbors who often beat monkeys, and despite several disagreements, I managed to persuade them to stop. The lessons of kindness and respect have permeated my interactions with others.
Formal Teaching and Early Successes
My formal teaching career began when I was still young. I taught an Australian version of English to a Dutch boy named Bert, which was a highlight in primary school. When I was 11, I moved to the city, where I became a sports coach for my high school rugby team. My father, a former champion, taught me the skills of rugby, and I passed them on to my teammates. We won the schoolboys grand final twice, and eight members of our team were selected for the State Schoolboys Rugby team. Later, I was a platoon sergeant in the military cadets, leading a group of 30 young cadets. At our graduation parade, my platoon won a commendation from the inspecting Brigadier.
The Journey into Teaching and Beyond
These experiences prepared me for a career as a teacher. Over the years, I have taught many thousands of students. Teaching gave me the opportunity to watch their potential unfold and unlock their destiny. With each success, I realized that instilling self-belief was the most valuable lesson I could impart to others. Whether it was my own journey of self-discovery or watching my wife, children, and grandchildren grow, the lessons of confidence and belief were the most impactful.
Conclusion
Teaching is not merely a task; it is a journey of sharing, learning, and growth. Whether it's playground games or formal education, imparting knowledge and instilling self-belief are among the most profound gifts we can give. Reflecting on my life, I am proud of the lessons I have shared and the successes I have witnessed. Teach and believe in the power of teaching.
