A Dying Father’s Simple Message That Changed My Life
From a Dying Father’s Words: A Life-Changing Message
Introduction
Words often carry weight, and sometimes, a dying father's simple statement can change a life forever. This article reflects on a message my father left behind that has stayed with me through the years.
My Father, A Legacy of Love
My dad, a type 2 diabetic with kidney failure, passed away on January 28th, 2016, when I was 15. He was in and out of hospitals, enduring kidney dialysis since August 2015. Due to an infected catheter, the dialysis had spread throughout his body, causing him immense pain. During his final stretch, he was at his weakest, needing assistance for food preparation, medication, and even basic needs.
The Last Year: A Time of Necessity and Love
The month of January in 2016 stands out as a particularly challenging period. My father was feeling his worst; he had lost his appetite and required assistance with his food and medications. He was on at least 10 different medications, including insulin.
The Change in a Person’s Life: A KindnessIgnited
It was a cold January day when my father’s condition prompted his parents, my grandparents, to seek help from my aunt for a bed frame. My mom was away, so it was left to me to ensure my father ate. Sitting by his side, I asked if he wanted a protein shake, a delicious and comforting concoction that tasted like a strawberry milkshake. He said yes. I made it for him, and in a moment of reflection, he said, "You're too good for me."
This phrase has resonated with me ever since. It is a stark reminder of the love and kindness that often go unnoticed and undervalued until it's too late.
Reflections on Parental Relationships
My father did not have a perfect relationship with me. Our communication was often strained, but there was one aspect of our relationship that stood out: he was a better parent than my controlling and abusive mother.
Despite the challenges, my father was a stabilizing force. His presence in my life, even in his weakened state, was a source of warmth and support. These memories, like the day he said, "You’re too good for me," are cherished reminders of his legacy.
Agnostic on Death, Reflective on Life
As the years have passed, the significance of my father’s words has grown. Reflecting on his passing, I am in awe of the impact of thoughtful, kind words. The phrase "You’re too good for me" has become more than just a statement; it’s a mantra for life, a message to live with kindness and to cherish every moment.
On the fifth anniversary of my father’s passing, I remember not only the pain of losing him but also the joy of the memories we shared. They remind me that life is precious and that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. If you are reading this and are thinking of a loved one, take a moment to express your gratitude and cherish the time you have together.
From the heart of a child who lost a parent, but gained a lifetime of memories and wisdom.
